Officials: U.S. kills 7 Afghan police

By AMIR SHAH, Associated Press Writer

KABUL, Afghanistan - U.S. forces mistakenly killed seven Afghan
police and wounded four in an apparent friendly fire incident
early Tuesday in eastern Afghanistan, Afghan officials said.

Police manning a remote checkpoint in Nangarhar province said an
American convoy backed by helicopters approached and opened
fire despite their protests and calls for them to stop.

"I thought they were Taliban, and we shouted at them to stop,
but they came closer and they opened fire," said Khan Mohammad,
one of the policemen at the post. "I'm very angry. We are here
to protect the Afghan government and help serve the Afghan
government, but the Americans have come to kill us."

The commander at the post, Esanullah, who goes by one name,
said a helicopter fired rockets, killing seven policemen and
wounding four.

U.S. troops mistakenly kill Afghan police

KABUL, Afghanistan - Afghan police mistakenly thought U.S.
troops on a nighttime mission were Taliban fighters and
opened fire on them, prompting U.S. forces to return fire
and call in attack aircraft, killing seven Afghan police,
officials said Tuesday.

U.S.-led coalition and Afghan troops, meanwhile, killed more
than 24 suspected Taliban fighters during an eight-hour battle
in southern Afghanistan on Monday, the coalition said.

President Hamid Karzai's spokesman labeled the shooting at a
remote police checkpoint in the eastern province of Nangarhar
"a tragic incident" caused by a lack of communication.

5. So popular we are around the world...
As if we don't have enough hatred stirred up in the Middle East, we just have to make sure there is no small corner of the world where they don't already despise us.

Maybe Borneo??? Are there are few that don't detest us there?

Better send it troops.

BRUSSELS, June 13 (Reuters) - NATO defence ministers will review procedures in Afghanistan on Thursday as part of efforts to halt a wave of civilian casualties threatening to undermine public support for foreign peacekeepers there.

NATO peace efforts in Afghanistan, vital to the credibility of the 49-year-old Western alliance, will be the centrepiece of talks in Brussels where U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates will also sound out his Russian counterpart on a surprise Kremlin offer of help for a U.S. missile shield plan.

U.S. forces on Tuesday mistakenly killed seven policemen in an air strike in the east of Afghanistan and the International Committee of the Red Cross warned that Western forces must do more to prevent civilian casualties when bombing insurgents.

NATO commanders say some of the incidents are the result of poor coordination with Afghan forces and a separate, U.S.-led coalition. But they recognise procedures must be tightened, accidents investigated more quickly and humanitarian help offered to victims.
