Iran to make U.S. "regret" detention of Iranians: Mottaki
Tue Jun 12, 2007 7:33AM EDT

By Fredrik Dahl

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran will make the United States "regret" its
detention of five Iranians in Iraq since early this year, Foreign
Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Tuesday.

Iran says the five Iranians detained by U.S. forces in the northern
Iraqi city of Arbil in January are diplomats and has demanded their
release. U.S. officials say they were involved in supporting militants
inside Iraq.

"We will make the Americans regret their ugly and illegal action
against the Islamic Republic of Iran's consulate in Arbil, Iraq, and
the abduction of the five Iranian diplomats," Mottaki said, according
to the state broadcaster's Web site.

Despite his tough statement, Mottaki held the door open for new
talks with the United States on how to end violence in Iraq.

Iran Asks U.S. Forces to `Immediately' Release Arbil Detainees

By Marc Wolfensberger

June 12 (Bloomberg) -- Iran urged the U.S. to ``immediately'' release five Iranian consular officials arrested in January in the Iraqi city of Arbil, warning of unspecified consequences if it fails to do so.

``We will make the U.S. regret its repulsive illegal action against Iran's consulate and its officials,'' state-run Mehr News cited Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki as saying today.

U.S. forces raided Iran's consulate in northern Arbil on Jan. 11 and detained five staff members. Preliminary investigations revealed the detainees belong to a unit of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard ``known for providing funds, weapons, improvised explosive device technology and training to extremist groups attempting to destabilize the government of Iraq and attack coalition forces,'' the U.S. military said at the time. Iran rejected the accusation.

On June 1, U.S. President George W. Bush demanded that the Iranian government release four U.S. citizens with ties to Iran ``immediately and unconditionally.''

2. Virtually everyone in the U.S. "regrets" its military kidnapping Iranian diplomats.
But "Fredrik Dahl" sure has an interesting spin on things.

3. "We will make the U.S. regret its revolting illegal action" is quoted by semi-official ISNA.
ISNA article here: http://www.isna.ir/Main/NewsView.aspx?ID=News-940803&Lang=E

These are Mottaki's words reported as Iran published them.
As the Reuters article says, the language went from tough
to conciliatory. Where is the spin?

4. there is no spin here as far as I can tell
 He made a strong statement for the masses and then toned it down a bit for the international audience. Same thing bushco and all the other nations do to appeal to their audience.

Iran to make U.S. "regret" detention of Iranians: Mottaki

By Fredrik Dahl

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran will make the United States "regret" its detention of five Iranians in Iraq since early this year, Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Tuesday.

One is phrased in such a way as to be belligerent, threatening, angry, bellicose, warlike, pugnacious ("making the U.S. 'regrent'") -- while the other is phrased as a request for them to have their people back ("Iran urged the U.S.").

Isn't it obvious?

Come on.

Both Reuters and Bloomberg are quoting from Iranian state
media sources. The Bloomberg article paraphrases Mottaki with
softer language and does not quote him as extensively as the
other articles. The Reuters author's "failure" to tone the
languange down is not spin.

Iran FM: U.S. will regret arresting the five Iranian diplomats

ISNA - Tehran
Service: Foreign Policy

TEHRAN, Jun.12 (ISNA)-Iran's foreign minister stated that
Iran would make the U.S. regret the "illicit" arrest of the
five Iranian diplomats in Arbil.

U.S. troops raided Iran's consulate in northern Iraq in early
January and arrested five Iranian diplomats accusing them
for fomenting unrest in Iraq.

"We will make the U.S. regret its revolting illegal action
against our consulate agents," said Mottaki speaking in a
joint press conference with the former President of Mali
and current African Union (AU) commissioner, Alpha
Oumar Konare.

Mottaki said Iran does not miss an opportunity in talks
with Iraqi officials to push for an immediate release of the
five kidnapped diplomats.

9. Of couse the two reporters report it differently.
The news can be reported in different ways -- one even seems to transpose words like "illicit" and "illegal" in quotations -- but this needs to be taken into account particularly when a Neonaznicon Junta is seeking another illegal war and creating an avalanche of pro-war propaganda.
