Sudan accepts hybrid force for Darfur: AU

1 hour, 17 minutes ago

ADDIS ABABA (Reuters) - Sudan has agreed to the deployment,
mandate and structure of a combined United Nations and African
Union peacekeeping force for its troubled Darfur region, a senior
AU official said on Tuesday.

Reading a statement after two days of meetings in Ethiopia's
capital Addis Ababa, AU Peace and Security Commissioner Said
Djinnit said Khartoum agreed to a force of between 17,000 and
19,000 troops after "clarifications" from AU and UN officials.

He did not elaborate, but said the agreement also called for an
immediate and comprehensive ceasefire and inclusive political
process in Darfur. And he appealed to the U.N. Security Council
to authorize the deployment of the hybrid force without delay.

He said Sudan had raised the issue of an "exit strategy" for the
peacekeepers, and all parties agreed the operation would be
periodically reviewed. He did not say how often.

Sudan accepts joint Darfur force

Sudan has agreed to a revised plan for a joint UN-African
Union (AU) peacekeeping force to be sent to war-torn
Darfur, AU sources say.

Under the new plan, the AU will run day-to-day operations,
while the UN is expected to have overall control of between
17,000 to 19,000 peacekeepers.

Earlier, Sudan's foreign minister said that Sudan would
accept peacekeepers made up of non-African troops.

The current AU force of 7,000 has struggled to contain
the violence.

1. it's about time-- now we'll have to see whether the U.N. and A.U. forces...
...will stop the genocide. It will undoubtedly require fighting.
