LOS ANGELES - Don Herbert, who as television’s “Mr. Wizard” introduced generations of young viewers to the joys of science, died Tuesday. He was 89.

Herbert, who had bone cancer, died at his suburban Bell Canyon home, said his son-in-law, Tom Nikosey.

“He really taught kids how to use the thinking skills of a scientist,” said former colleague Steve Jacobs. He worked with Herbert on a 1980s show that echoed the original 1950s “Watch Mr. Wizard” series, which became a fond baby boomer memory.

6. We could use him on the air now.
Maybe the next generation might actually understand the concept of science.

9. Science programming on broadcast TV...
...has been largely jettisoned because it doesn't sell as much ad time as wall-to-wall coverage of Paris Hilton or Anna Nicole Smith.

It's very sad that science has been farmed out to obscure cable or satellite channels. What does that say about us as a society?

11. I grew up watching him.
He was just about the coolest guy on TV back in the days--smart, passionate, and he knew how to communicate the magic of science beautifully.

RIP, Mr. Wizard. I was a huge fan. :applause:
