Iran moves to execute porn stars |
|
Source: AP
TEHRAN, Iran — Iran's parliament on Wednesday voted in favor of a bill that could lead to death penalty for persons convicted of working in the production of pornographic movies.
With a 148-5 vote in favor and four abstentions, lawmakers present at the Wednesday session of the 290-seat parliament approved that "producers of pornographic works and main elements in their production are considered corruptors of the world and could be sentenced to punishment as corruptors of the world."
The term, "corruptor of the world" is taken from the Quran, the Muslims' holy book, and ranks among the highest on the scale of an individual's criminal offenses. Under Iran's Islamic Penal Code, it carries a death penalty.
The "main elements" refered to in the draft include producers, directors, cameramen and actors involved in making a pornographic video.

On second thought, here ya go.
I think it was the great Emo Phillips who once said, "Give me liberty or give me death" is a bit extreme. I am more along the lines of "Give me liberty or stub my toe"

The U.S. does not hold the patent on outrageous acts, as some here, I think, seem to believe. Executing these people is an outrage, and I'll call it one.

25. I understand the confusion |
|
A month or so ago, I posted a poll in General Discussion that was something like, "Ahmadinejad - just brilliant, or brilliant and semi-divine?" One of the mods deleted it, thinking I meant it seriously.
At first, I was annoyed, but then I realized that the confusion was understandable.

...I've seen a few, but that's about it. What I have noticed is a tendency for a lot of people to treat the opposition movement in Iran like tools of Dubya when (for once) that usually is not the case. Many don't seem to realize a lot of Iranians, especially those under 45, want better relations with the West and reject the more extreme elements that support Ahmadinejad.

I'm fairly sure "do not watch other people having sex" is in the Koran--and what but "watching other people having sex" is porn?
MAKING porn definitely comes into modesty violations and sexual impurity, among other things.
Porn in a Muslim society is anathema; perhaps the five who voted against making producing it an act worthy of execution thought exceptionally long prison sentences in one of Iran's finer prisons was a more suitable punishment.

22. How Terrible, We'd Better Invade Iran Now! |
|
Of course, none of our allies (for example, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan) would do this sort of thing...
Oh wait. Yes they would.
It's almost as though someone's publicizing social features of Iran that are common to most of the developing world in order to generate public outrage calculated at justifying a war to grab their natural resources, isn't it?
Now, who could those people be...?

A. Decide to go to war
B. Dehumanize the enemy
C. Kill them
We are on B right now, and since this Iaanian law is anathema to Americans (which it is), then time to put that in the papers in bold print and get a little outrage. A few more will dismiss Iranians as inhuman....then the bombing can begin in earnest (because bombing them to save them is so 21st Century and cool).
No "atta boys" from me, but then again...the "atta boy" argument was a deliberate exaggeration meant to denigrate other DUers and sew some discord. Leave the strawmen at home, please.

Insofar as Ahmadinejad's election victory in 2005 over the more moderate Rafsanjani, was the result of a conservative Iranian backlash caused directly by American hostility to Iran and the US invasion of Iraq.
Ahmadinejad is the Iranian version of Bush - a beady-eyed, fundamentalist, reactionary dumbfuck whose constituency is credulous, xenophobic people outside the major cities.

But still that's no reason to kill them and topple the only they have. Bush would make things worse.
If Bush were capable of implementing a new system, I'd say go for it. But he is not. That is something only for the educated. And I say it again, they can start with Rosseau's Social Contract.
