U.N. supports U.S troops staying in Iraq

UNITED NATIONS - The U.N. Security Council agreed Wednesday to an Iraqi request to extend the mandate of the U.S.-led multinational force after the country's foreign minister said the troops were "vitally necessary."

The council also strongly condemned the bombing of Samarra's revered Shiite shrine and urged all countries, especially those in the region, to support Iraq in its pursuit of peace.

Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told the council members that despite the senseless violence "the government has made tremendous strides toward the day when security will be provided by a self-sufficient, Iraqi national security force."

"While Iraqis will always be grateful for their liberation from an absolute despot, no Iraqi government official — indeed, no Iraqi citizen — wants the presence of foreign troops on Iraqi soil one day longer than is vitally necessary," he said.

1. That's going to cost us.
If we weren't there to steal their oil I'd have been all for it. And if I were an Iraqi, and we weren't there to steal their oil, I'd want some protection as well. Just one major problem- Do we stay forever? Because unless we do, we have to leave sometime. And what happens then? The whole thing is a heist. It's pretty hard to turn these lemons into lemonade. Something tells me George will drag this out until the next administration works with someone like Wes Clark to configure a proper and humane way of handing their country back. I wish Americans would stop handing the keys to their country to drunks. It always results in a wreck.

I support the troops with my tax dollars. But I'd prefer my money went toward something that resulted in a benefit for American tax payers.

2. How the hell would the parliament vote with the speaker removed?
So no way.

But... seriously, I cannot read this article in plain English and agree with the AP's characterization. The UN authorized a REVIEW of the mandate by June 15 - there was no extension, merely a lack of a cut-off of the mandate at the request of Iraq's government.

The parliamentary resolution concerned when the mandate would be up for actual renewal this December.

Iraq making progress, minister tells impatient U.S.
By Claudia Parsons Reuters - Friday, June 15 02:42 am

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshiyar Zebari
insisted on Thursday his government was making progress on
political reforms, including a disputed oil law, in the face
of growing impatience from Washington.

Zebari was pressed over slow progress on "benchmarks" at a
meeting of the Council of Foreign Relations in New York the
day after the U.N. Security Council renewed the mandate of
the U.S.-led multinational force in Iraq.

Washington is pressing for progress in areas such as a
revenue-sharing oil law, changes to a law banning former
Baath party members from public life, and constitutional
reforms.

"These issues are very important, they are existential issues
for Iraq," he said. "They're not bound by certain time lines,
to be squeezed and to be resolved very quickly."

He said the government was determined to bring all sides into
the process rather than ruling by absolute majority, even if
that was slower.

4. lazy reporting
Kagemusha is right, the mandate doesn't come up for renewal until December.

http://www.un.org/News/Press/docs/2007/sc9042.doc.htm

As required by resolution 1723 (2006), members of the Security Council discussed on 13June the mandate of the Multinational Force (MNF) in Iraq, and certain arrangements for the Development Fund for Iraq (DFI) and the International Advisory and Monitoring Board (IAMB).

The members of the Security Council received a briefing by Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari, who provided the Council with an update on current developments in Iraq, including the implementation of the Government of Iraq’s Baghdad Security Plan and on its political, economic and reconciliation efforts. United States Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad reported to the members of the Council on behalf of MNF-I the efforts of the force. As requested by the Government of Iraq in its 8 June letter, the members of the Council agreed upon the continuation of the MNF-I mandate and of the arrangements for the DFI and IAMB, in accordance with resolution 1723 (2006).
