Libby headed back to court
Source: AP

WASHINGTON - Former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby is headed back to court to try to forestall his 2 1/2-year prison term in the CIA leak case.

Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, planned to ask a federal judge Thursday to put the sentence on hold while he appeals his perjury and obstruction conviction.

It would be a longshot request before a judge who has already said he sees no reason to grant it.

But even if U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton were to order Libby to prison at Thursday's hearing, it is unlikely Libby would be taken away in handcuffs. Rather, it would led to more maneuvering in Libby's legal fight.

3. We're about to find out if this trial has been a charade
Unless Scooter spends some time behind bars, the whole prosecution has been a waste of time, and the American judicial system has failed.

If CIA agents aren't safe from political crimes, none of us are.

5. Nothing to do with the safety of CIA agents, unfortunately.
The law is too weasely to make prosecution practicable, and so he had to go down for lying and obstruction.

4. He's lucky that it's not the 15th. century
He would have been drawn and quartered long ago, in fact this whole fucking misadministration would have met the same fate, we're civilized though, so we''ve moved on, we only punish real crimes like consensual sex.

CIA Leak Trial Judge Received Threats

By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer

Thursday, June 14, 2007

(06-14) 08:45 PDT WASHINGTON, (AP) --

The federal judge who oversaw I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's CIA
leak trial said Thursday that he received threatening letters
and phone calls after sentencing the former White House aide
to prison.

"I received a number of angry, harassing mean-spirited phone
calls and letters," U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton said.
"Some of those were wishing bad things on me and my family."

Walton made the remarks as he opened a hearing into whether
to delay Libby's 2 1/2-year sentence. He said he was holding
the letters in case something happened but said they would
have no effect on Thursday's decision.

Libby Loses Bid to Stay Out of Jail For Appeal

A federal judge ordered Vice President Cheney's former chief of staff to surrender in six to eight weeks to begin serving his 30-month prison term, increasing the pressure for President Bush to decide soon whether he will pardon the only administration official prosecuted in a White House leak investigation.

U.S. District Judge Reggie B. Walton said both the law and his own sense of fairness required that he reject I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby's request to remain free while appealing his conviction for perjury and obstruction of the leak investigation, an approach that could have deferred the pardon question for years.
