Renewable fuels provision stalls energy bill

POSTED: 10:00 a.m. EDT, June 15, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Democrats, eager for a vote on energy legislation, ran into staunch Republican resistance Thursday to requiring that utilities use more wind, solar and other renewable sources to produce electricity.

The impasse over renewable fuels came as Democrats said they would seek nearly $13.7 billion in tax breaks to promote clean energy, biofuels, more fuel efficient vehicles and conservation.

The Senate Finance Committee intends to discuss the tax plan on Tuesday, according to the committee chairman, Sen. Max Baucus, D-Montana. It also would create incentives such as tax credits for technology to capture carbon dioxide -- the leading greenhouse gas -- from power plants.

Senators late Thursday rejected a proposal to allow limited natural gas development in waters off the mid-Atlantic coast despite a long-standing drilling moratorium.

3. Then don't pass the bill. When will the Dems just stand up and say
alright, you won't agree to anything, we won't pass these funding bills. Shut the whole shebang down!! What's the hurry? Why this big push to get these bills through? If it shuts down a number of government agencies, so what? They're just stealing our money anyway.
