Colombia gay rights step closer

Last Updated: Saturday, 16 June 2007, 02:57 GMT 03:57 UK

Congress in Colombia has approved a bill to grant homosexual couples the same rights to social security benefits as heterosexual couples.

If ratified by the Senate and signed by President Alvaro Uribe, it would make Colombia the first Latin American country to pass a national measure.

The bill gives equal health insurance rights and allows a surviving gay partner to inherit shared assets.

The law could take effect soon as it has President Uribe's backing.

1. So COLOMBIA is moving farther ahead
than us on this.

South Africa also approved gay marriage...

Pathetic that a developed nation can't get things like equal rights correct...

2. I think I read somewhere that Colombia's government is considered the most reactionary govt in South
America.
Makes this all the more disturbing that they did it first.

3. Hmmmmm, perhaps we'd better Invade soon.
And get them back in line.

They are supposed to be facilitating our fake War On Drugs, not focusing on needless, Godless things like equal rights, or human rights for queers.

:sarcasm:

Freedom isn't allowed to March unless we're the one's Marching all over it.

4. Good for them, Columbia is still mostly a Catholic country
so some heads are spinning in the Church.
