U.S. calls Pakistan's Musharraf "agent for change"

By Simon Cameron-Moore

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Senior U.S. officials held talks with
President Pervez Musharraf on Saturday, after stressing
Washington's desire to see him guide Pakistan to free and
fair elections, and eventually quit his post as army chief.

Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte and Assistant
Secretary of State Richard Boucher met Musharraf against
the backdrop of a brewing political crisis over the president's
move to sack the country's top judge.

Admiral William J. Fallon, chief of the U.S. Central Command,
later met General Musharraf, who gained power in a coup
eight years ago and became a crucial ally in the fight
against al Qaeda and a Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan.

Their visits are seen as a demonstration of the importance
of Washington's relationship with nuclear-armed Pakistan at
a time when Musharraf is short of friends.

3. Musharraf is Pakistan's version of the Shah of Iran
America loved the Shah, so much so, that we were all shocked to see how much the Iranian people hated him after he was toppled from power. We are making the same mistake in Pakistan.

Bush's legacy will be an arc of Islamic radical regimes, of different flavours of course, extending from the shores of the Mediterranean to Islamabad.

Our troops in Iraq will be the hamburger patty inside a radical Islamic bun.
