Grand jury examines Stevens' ties to Veco
Source: Anchorage Daily News

A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., heard evidence last month about the expansion of U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens' Girdwood home in 2000 and other matters connecting Stevens to the oil services company Veco Inc.

(snip)

The existence of the Washington grand jury investigation is the strongest indication to date that Stevens himself has become a subject of the wide-ranging federal probe that surfaced with FBI raids on state legislative offices last August. Former State Sen. Ben Stevens, Ted Stevens' son, was among the legislators whose offices were searched. Ben Stevens has denied wrongdoing.

The FBI said at the time that it also had executed a search warrant in Girdwood, among other places, although the location of that search has never been disclosed.

(very long story snipped for brevity)

So things get hotter and hotter for Testy Tubular Ted and his arrogant heir Ben. Since Ted-For-Life and Dumb Young can no longer pump the pork and the foobird is coming home to roost, even Alaskan Repugnicans are getting sick of it.

Alaska Dems need to capitalize on this and get candidates that can beat Ted and Don now that they're vulnerable. When former Lt. Gov. Fran Ulmer, now Acting Chancellor of UAA, came back to Juneau for a funeral several weeks ago, folks were urging her to run against Stevens or Young, but she says she doesn't want to live in DC.

Neither Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich or former Gov. Tony Knowles seems to want to run for the Congressional seat, even though Mark would be a shoe-in. After all, even after his father's plane disappeared, Nick Begich beat Don Young for the seat. Young was elected in special election held 3 or 4 months after the plane carrying Hale Boggs and Begich was lost, and they had been declared dead.

Interesting, too, that it's been a DC grand jury, not an Alaskan one, that's been hearing evidence about the Stevens house remodel.

Now when does the Dumb Young Coconut Road grand jury start?

D.C. grand jury examines Sen. Ted Stevens' ties to VECO

By: Associated Press Wire Reports -

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) -- A federal grand jury in Washington, D.C., has heard evidence about a remodeling project at veteran U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens' home as part of a burgeoning investigation into corruption in Alaska, the Anchorage Daily News reported Sunday.

The investigation is linked to the VECO Corp. bribery case that produced guilty pleas last month from two of the oil-field service company's top executives, according to law enforcement officials. The investigation also led to federal indictments against one current and two former Republican members of the Alaska House of Representatives on bribery and extortion charges.

Bob Persons, a friend and neighbor of the Alaska Republican senator, was ordered to appear before a grand jury in Washington on May 25, according to the Daily News. The government directed Persons to submit documents related to the work on Stevens' home in Girdwood, a resort town about 40 miles south of Anchorage, including work tied to VECO and contractors who were hired or supervised by VECO, the newspaper said.

Persons was overseeing the home expansion project while Stevens and his wife were in Washington. Persons could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Bob Penney, an Alaska businessman and associate of Stevens, testified two weeks ago before a federal grand jury in Anchorage that has gathered information in the corruption cases. He said Sunday he was "required not to discuss the issue" and referred comments to his attorney, Bruce Gagnon, who could not be reached.

6. Sure would like to see Murkowski get his due as well
He was right in the thick of things and should be indicted as well as Stevens and his son Ben. It pleases me when the very high and mighty get their come-uppence. I hope the same goes for Doolittle and Lewis
