Kerry: Military Power Alone Won’t Win Iraq, Terror Campaigns

The United States cannot achieve victory in Iraq solely with military might, a top Senate Democrat said, meaning the Bush administration should begin using other tactics — including placing more pressure on Iraqi President Nuri al-Maliki — to stabilize the war-torn nation.

Nor is the Bush administration’s military-focused approach winning the global battle against extremism, said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

The United States is “clearly losing the ground battle to terrorists worldwide,” Kerry said, citing what he called a collective assessment of U.S. intelligence agencies.

The scorecard of the six-year-old struggle shows America is “more isolated” from the rest of the world, “more divided domestically,” and its “armed forces are stretched to the breaking point,” said Kerry, attributing the third point to senior military officials.
