Heavy mortar bomb attack on Baghdad Green Zone
19 Jun 2007 15:57:24 GMT

BAGHDAD, June 19 (Reuters) - Militants fired a spate
of mortar bombs at Baghdad's Green Zone on Tuesday
in one of the heaviest attacks in weeks on the heavily
fortified compound that houses the U.S. embassy and
Iraqi government offices.

It was unclear if there were any casualties from the
barrage of around 10 mortar bombs. Reuters reporters
could see several plumes of smoke rising from the
compound on the west side of the Tigris River.

Loud sirens warning people to take cover echoed across
the zone.

The Green Zone is Baghdad's most secure area but often
comes under rocket and mortar attack by militants in
other parts of the city. The strikes have lately become
more frequent and more accurate.

1. Remember when the Green Zone being attacked was "unthinkable"?

4. It is actually an ancient Arab welcome: like roses and candy. To wish us a happy Early 4 July.

That was why the giant truck bomb in the city was lit off earlier today: to wish us a happy welcome to the "surge."
The United States has always been at war with Iraq. The United States has never supported the Iraqis against the Iranians. War is peace. Up is down. Black is white.

Orwell rolls.

7. The I.E.D. is the Iraqi version of The Welcome Wagon.
We just need to understand their customs.

5. Unclear as to whether or not there were any casualites?
How friggin' stupid.

Unlikely that we'll find out anyway. Remember Camp Falcon?

9. I have theories about everything, but whatever happened in
this instance must have been pretty bad. I saw videos of the explosions. I dont' see how anyone could not have been hurt. But I know damn sure that there was a lot of damage, and they don't want us to know anything about it. So that automatically send my mind into hyperdrive and I think the worst.

10. Can we rename it the "Yellow Zone" instead?
It ain't green anymore, not with heavy mortars bombarding on a regular basis.
