A white-supremacist Web site angered by a Leonard Pitts Jr. column alluding to the murder of a white couple posted The Miami Herald writer's home address and phone number -- leading to threats against the 2004 Pulitzer Prize winner.

When Herald Managing Editor/News Dave Wilson asked Overthrow.com to delete the address and phone number, site editor Bill White replied: "We have no intention of removing Mr. Pitts' personal information. Frankly, if some loony took the info and killed him, I wouldn't shed a tear. That also goes for your whole newsroom."

Pitts, in the early June column that set off Overthrow.com, wrote about the brutal January murder of a white couple in Tennessee. A group of African Americans were charged with the crime. "(I)f the defendants in this case did what they are accused of doing, I'd be happy to see them rot under the jailhouse," wrote Pitts.

But Pitts also noted that the supremacists and conservative bloggers who pushed the murder case into the national spotlight were examples of white people who "put on the victim hat" and allege that black crime against whites is underreported.

"Black crime against whites is underreported? On what planet? Study after study and expert after expert tell a completely different story," wrote Pitts, who's syndicated by Tribune Media Services .

I was astonished to find out that the USA Attorney that was replaced in western Missouri had among other "flaws" the inability to let go and minimize the punishment of a fellow that was out burning crosses on people's lawns and threatening those people.

He, and the judge in charge of the case, wanted the maximum punishment - FBI and his superiors thought that that was silly.

On February 14, 1996, White was featured in a front-page story in The Washington Post after posting on Internet news groups the name and telephone number of a woman he thought was abusing her daughter. The supposed victim had allegedly told a university counseling group that her parents would not allow her to use the telephone or see friends; someone from the group spread the story, and White posted it, asking readers to telephone the mother and "tell her you are disgusted and you demand that she stops." The Post reported that the mother and step-father were near breaking point after receiving threatening telephone calls. <2>

Columbine High School massacre

On April 20, 1999, two teenage students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, went on a shooting rampage at Columbine High School, killing 12 students and a teacher, before committing suicide.

Reuters wrote that White's website had published that "schools and juvenile psychiatric centers ... prescribe anti-depressants are evil and should be destroyed, and it gives a list of "Music to Shoot Your School Up By." The report continued that "here are so many parallels between the Web site's message and the April 20 massacre in Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, that some police hate-crime experts say privately it is not inconceivable that the two teen-age gunmen in that case visited the site." <3> FBI officials told Reuters there was no indication that the website had any connection to the shooting.

White told Reuters that "t]he reason got killed is that they are part of an authoritarian social movement and were seen by the killers as symbolic of that movement ... What the shooters were shooting at was not people but the movements they symbolized. It's a shame that authoritarian Christians, who are trying to dominate our society, don't have a clue how objectionable they are until people start shooting them."<3> He said he would neither confirm nor deny that what he called a "Colorado cell" of his Utopian Anarchist Party had been in contact with the teenagers before the shooting.<3>

He's one of the few bright spots in The Miami Herald. For the most part, they are quite conservative. Until they were purchased by McClatchy they were Knight-Ridder, and big Bush cheerleaders. WASHINGTON — The FBI is investigating death threats against Leonard Pitts, a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for The Miami Herald, after a column he wrote about black-on-white crime triggered a furor on white supremacist Web sites.

Days after The Herald published Pitts' column, Overthrow.com posted his address, his home phone number and his wife's name. Several other white supremacist Internet sites followed suit, and one gave directions to his house along with a satellite image of the neighborhood.

Pitts said that none of the threats was specific and that "nobody has come to the house." However, he said, someone leafleted his neighborhood with a flier attacking him for the column.

Pitts has received dozens of hostile phone calls at his home and about 400 e-mails, said Dave Wilson, the Herald's managing editor for news.

"An unsettling number of those were threats," Wilson said. The messages, which ranged widely in gravity, included death threats, he said.
