Thursday June 21, 2007
Guardian UnlimitedThe Ministry of Defence tonight named the soldier who was killed
in southern Iraq during a mortar attack on a military base early
yesterday morning.
Major Paul Harding, 48, a company commander in the 4th Battalion
The Rifles, formerly the Royal Green Jackets, is one of the highest
ranking British officers to die since the 2003 invasion.
Maj Harding, described as a "courageous" and highly respected

in Basra - a small and very isolated outpost in the centre of the
city - came under fire.
Today, his colleagues paid warm tributes to the major, who lived
in Winchester with his wife and two sons.
