Bush pledges to increase US funding to Israel
Source: Ynetnews

US to bolster economic aid to Israel in new 10-year agreement, says US President Bush after meeting with Prime Minister Olmert

<snip>

"In a White House statement issued following Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's visit to Washington, President George W. Bush pledged to increase US military aid to Israel over the course of the next decade.

An American team will land in Israel in July to finalize the deal. Israel currently receives an annual $2.4 billion in military aid.

"I am strongly committed to Israel's security and viability as a Jewish state, and to the maintenance of its qualitative military edge," said Bush in the statement."

<snip>

"The deal Bush seeks to finalize would commence in 2009 and would remain valid for 10 years. Olmert's office declined comment on the specific amounts being discussed."

"A few months ago, Israel submitted a request to raise the annual sum by 25 percent over 10 years, from $2.4 billion to $3b."

29. So let's see:
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 04:42 AM by LeftishBrit
If Israel fights a war, like last year in Lebanon, they are blamed for their hawkishness and violence (For the record: I was strongly against that war, and did blame them on that occasion.)

If they don't fight a war, then they are blamed for 'talking the talk and not walking the walk'.

If the UK sends troops to Bush's Iraq war, then they are blamed (rightly) for being collaborators in an illegal war.

If Israel doesn't send troops to Bush's Iraq war, then 'they only want America's money'.

I have no opinion about how much aid America should or shouldn't be giving Israel, or any country; but some of the comments are getting to sound like an automatic blaming of Israel for everything.

30. I choose
not to blame Israel for anything. I'd love to see peace break out in the middle east for about 100 thousand years, but if any country benefits from our being in Iraq it is Israel. I can understand why the US doesn't want them involved militarily, but covert support in some other manner is warranted and may be taking place.

34. The war also endangers Israel, along with other Middle Eastern countries
Edited on Thu Jun-21-07 10:08 AM by LeftishBrit
The country was very divided on the issue before the war, with more against an Iraqi war than for it.

No doubt there is some collaboration between the governments however; and I daresay that the idiot Olmert is just as high up Bush's arse as Tony Blair and John Howard are- how does he ever find so much room for all these people there!

40. Re: it's no wonder...
.. the neocons are taking full advantage of their influence in the current regime to extend and increase aid to Israel before they lose absolute power in the next election.

This again is not in America's best interest, but that's hardly news.

7. Well of course he is
It is a payoff for playing "see no evil" in the Palestinian political coup we are financing. Also it forces the next President to either continue the payments or face the shrieks of Antisemitism should he/she decide to cut funding a win/win for Bush and Co, but the "best" is yet to come I fear.
