Star TribuneWASHINGTON - Former U.S. Attorney Tom Heffelfinger will testify today before the Senate Indian Affairs committee in Washington, where he has become embroiled in the controversy over the Justice Department's firings of U.S. attorneys.
Heffelfinger, who resigned last year, is scheduled to appear at an oversight hearing on law enforcement in Indian Country, an issue that reportedly put him at cross-purposes with the Bush administration, which put him on a list of prosecutors considered for dismissal.
With the reasons for many of the dismissals in dispute on Capitol Hill, it's unclear whether Democrats on the committee will ask him about that.
Heffelfinger has said that he left without any pressure.
But a former Justice Department official told Congress last month that the administration had concerns about the amount of time Heffelfinger spent on American Indian issues.
