Supreme Court upholds limits on high school sports recruiting

By Mark Sherman

7:31 a.m. June 21, 2007

WASHINGTON – The Supreme Court said Thursday that athletic
associations can enforce limits on recruiting high school athletes
without violating coaches' free speech rights.

The high court ruled in a longstanding dispute between a
Tennessee athletic association and a football powerhouse, the
private Brentwood Academy near Nashville.

The school challenged a rule of the Tennessee Secondary School
Athletic Association, which governs high school sports in the
state. The association bars schools from contacting prospective
students about their sports programs.

In a unanimous ruling, the court said that “hard-sell tactics
directed at middle school students could lead to exploitation,
distort competition between high school teams and foster an
environment in which athletics are prized more highly than
academics.”

1. Funny coincidence--saw a story at ESPN yesterday
about a 14-year-old JUNIOR highschooler announcing he was going to play basketball at USC. He hasn't even picked his high school yet!

3. It's worse than I thought! I found this story about it
(Chicago Sun-Times): Aurora basketball phenom Ryan Boatright, 14, hasn't decided where to attend high school, but he already has picked a college.

The 5-10 guard gave an oral commitment to USC coach Tim Floyd on Sunday. Boatright was at USC for a basketball camp over the weekend...

DePaul and Indiana expressed interest, but USC was first to offer a scholarship...

Because he hadn't turned pro, the NCAA made Tiger Woods pay for half a dinner Arnold Palmer treated him to. But they have no problem with their colleges recruiting junior high schoolers????

4. Meh.
Lots of kids think they know where they're going to go to college.
