Romney aide is the focus of probe Allegedly acted as State Police trooper
Source: Boston Globe

State Police are investigating one of Mitt Romney's top campaign aides for allegedly impersonating a trooper by calling a Wilmington company and threatening to cite the driver of a company van for erratic driving, according to two law enforcement sources familiar with the probe

The New Hampshire attorney general, according to the Associated Press, has also opened an investigation into a report that a Romney aide, later identified as Garrity, pulled over a New York Times reporter in New Hampshire and said he had run his license plate.

In 2004, the Globe reported, Garrity was cited and fined for driving a Crown Victoria with red and blue lights mounted in the grill, a siren, a PA system, and strobe lights; and for having a nightstick and identification showing a State Police patch that read "Official Business."

I can see calling the State Troopers to complain about an erratic driver - but this guy is a trooper wanna be.

2. I saw this on TV yesterday
They were talking like it wasn't that big a thing but I think it is. Pulling someone over and pretending to be a policeman? That's a real bad thing to do.

3. Because of women getting raped after "cop" pulled them
over, a lot of states have strong laws about people pretending to be cops and pulling people over.

10. This seems a tad serious
Certainly more serious than a campaign hiring a public relations person who said mean things on her blog before she was hired by the campaign. After all, Mr. Garrity seems to be pursuing a pattern and practice of impersonating a state trooper and he's still got a job with Romney. Will the usual suspects hyperventilate themselves into a tizzy over this, or is it okay since it's a Republican?

11. This isn't Garrity's first cop wannabe incident.
Edited on Fri Jun-22-07 12:35 PM by Eugene
This cop wannabe episode had a familiar ring to it.
Sure enough, Garrity had a similar brush with the
law in 2004. He is an ex-Bushbot who likes to
play policeman.

Romney Aide Takes Leave Amid Probes
By GLEN JOHNSON
Associated Press Writer

BOSTON -- An ever-present aide to Republican presidential
contender Mitt Romney took a leave of absence Friday after
he became the subject of investigations in two states for
allegedly impersonating a law enforcement officer.

His attorney denied the charges.

-snip-

In 2004, Garrity was cited and fined by Massachusetts officials
after a Ford Crown Victoria registered to him was found to have
lights, a siren, radios and other law enforcement equipment --
including a baton -- after it was parked illegally in Boston's
North End. At the time, Garrity was paid $75,000 annually as
Romney's gubernatorial chief of operations.
