8. You might enjoy this story.
A few years ago Mrs. Johnson's granddaughter graduated from Duke. Lady Bird was in town for the ceremony and her granddaughter wanted to take her out to her favorite local diner.

On Sundays the restaurant is very busy for breakfast and lunch and always has a waiting list - they don't take reservations. Lady Bird, her daughter and granddaughter arrived and put their name on the list. They were told they would have about an hour wait. The diner has an outside porch (no a/c) and it was very hot. After a little time had passed the manager realized that the older woman standing outside in the heat was a former first lady. She took her out a chair and indicated that she would try and expedite her seating. Lady Bird insisted that they wait their turn - and they did.

Meanwhile, several Duke parents were acting like assholes. Angry because the restaurant did not take reservations, didn't have a large air conditioned waiting area, etc. One of the parents was apparently very disruptive and kept creating a scene by yelling at the manager. Finally one of the owners came out and said -"If waiting their turn is good enough for a former first lady and her family it should be good enough for you. Let me see - where are you on the list. Oh here you are - you have just been crossed off. We will not be able to serve you."

I am a regular at the establishment and happened to go in for dinner. The wait staff was all a twitter about Lady Bird. I knew almost everyone who worked there and they all know that I have a passion for politics. They were excited to see me because they wanted a history lesson on Lady Bird and they all wanted to talk about how wonderful she was.

18. You are welcome.
I remember the kids (wait staff) asked me about her health. She was walking with a cane. Also, she was apparently wearing those very dark wrap around sunglasses and they felt she had trouble with her vision.

All of the kids were born long after Johnson was President but they were all going to go home and read up on Lady Bird. They were excited to find out she was an early feminist and conservationist.

With regard to her visit to that diner and those kids that met her - funny how little it took to leave a lasting and positive impression.

19. I remember reading that she's pretty much blind now.
Her pet project was "beautification." She came to a town near me to dedicate a vest-pocket park in an urban area. She was responsible for plantings along highways and other not-so-nice areas all over the country. Contrast Nancy Reagan's "Foster Grandparent" program, at a time when she was estranged from her own grandchildren.

4. I did.
She's like 94 and the second oldest First Lady ever, behind Bess Truman who lived until she was 97.

6. a kick for Lady Bird ... nee Claudia Alta Taylor
http://www.wildflower.org/ladybird/

Still active in conservation work -- a visionary who was way ahead of her time, in linking the environment, social justice, and quality of life issues. (She helped make it possible for the current "sustainability" movement, "green communities", and other ideas that we hope will shape a cleaner, more equitable century.)
