Iranian forces crossed Iraqi border: report (UK tabloid The Sun)
Source: AFP

LONDON (AFP) - Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces have been spotted by British troops crossing the border into southern Iraq, The Sun tabloid reported on Tuesday.

Britain's defence ministry would not confirm or deny the report, with a spokesman declining to comment on "intelligence matters".

An unidentified intelligence source told the tabloid: "It is an extremely alarming development and raises the stakes considerably. In effect, it means we are in a full on war with Iran -- but nobody has officially declared it."

"We have hard proof that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps have crossed the border to attack us. It is very hard for us to strike back. All we can do is try to defend ourselves. We are badly on the back foot."

The Sun said that radar sightings of Iranian helicopters crossing into the Iraqi desert were confirmed to it by very senior military sources.

1. Can we get confirmation on this?

If this is true, hold onto your hats. I expect the Turks will make their move into Iraqi Kurdistan shortly, if this is true.

3. Why can't they strike back?
I don't understand that part.

If this is true, and if they have radar sightings, then the kind of airpower the UK/US forces have at their disposal should make short work of any such invasion.

5. I've heard the rules of engagement specify only return fire.
Though I'm pretty sure they can open fire on anyone with an RPG. Some of the people I have spoken to about it recently specified that they aren't allowed to fire until fired upon due to the large number of armed people in the area. I'd much rather be armed rather than unarmed if I was in Iraq right now, makes sense for the civilians to want the same thing.

7. The Brits have changed their ROE since the Iranians took Brit hostages in the Shat al Arab waterway
The sun sets on the British empire if they talk themselves into a bad spot with the Iranians again where no decisions are to be made in the field until all the leaders sleeping back home are notified to form a concensus on what to do

Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.

Iranian Cannon to left of them,
Iranian Cannon in front of them

of course, the whole story of "uniformed" Iranian troops may not be true at all.

6. Didn't the Queen of England "knight" Salmon Rushdie ?
That irked the radical muslim world

Rushdie knighted in honors list

Salman Rushdie, who went into hiding under threat of death after an Iranian fatwa, has been knighted by the Queen.
His book The Satanic Verses offended Muslims worldwide and a bounty was placed on his head in 1989.

8. Well, I guess they are building their web of lies in order to justify the
invasion of Iran and the murder of many many more innocents. This gets old. Why not just invade and say, "You can't stop us, because we own you!" At least they would be telling us the truth for once...

9. Don't believe a fuckin' word of it
With all this hullabaloo over Iran, when is the M$M going to ask the big question: WHY? It doesn't make sense that Iran would deliberately start a war with the US and Britain.

As for these intelligence agencies, bear in mind these are the same ones who were so adamant about Saddam's WMDs.

10. Iranian forces crossed Iraqi border: report

Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces have been spotted by British troops crossing the border into southern Iraq, The Sun tabloid reported on Tuesday.

In response to the report, a British defence ministry spokesman said: "There is evidence that explosive devices used against our troops in southern Iraq originated in Iran."

"Any Iranian link to armed militias in Iraq either through weapons supply, training or funding are unacceptable."

Britain has about 7,100 soldiers in Iraq, most of whom are based in the southern city of Basra and surrounding areas, though the government has pledged to reduce that to between 5,000 and 5,500 this year.

12. "We have hard proof"... oh? Where?!?!?
The US also had "hard proof" of Iraqi forces along the Saudi border in 1991 but we all know that was FAKED!!!

And, besides, Hersh has reported for over 3 years that the US has had commando teams on various incursions into Iranian territory!

19. Hmmm
Your sure this was 'The Sun' it was mentioned in?

Now, if the article had mentioned the Iranian Army was being led by Bigfoot, using alien anti-gravity helicopters and death rays with exclusive pictures taken by a semi-naked 38DD female soldier, I would believe it was from 'The Sun'.

25. The harm that Murdoch has done in this world beggars belief. But
Edited on Tue Jun-26-07 03:11 PM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
isn't it weird how they end up wanting to be Catholics, sometimes becoming Catholics. I suppose its the Church's historical treachery to the fundamental axiom of Christ's Gospel concerning what this World admires and what God cherishes.* They feel/hope Vatican II may not be kosher. But I suppose he's but one of many pawns who are big in the life, and if he had not made the choices he, in fact, made, there would have been someone else who operated to the same effect.

This sorry collusion with the "great ones of this World" and all its attendant horrors, which has so characterised the institutional Christian churches' history, some of them evidently still extant, in no wise detracts from the truth that the best and noblest values even of our now post-Christian culture, we owe to our Christian past, but are taken for granted by non-believers, who nowadays think them innate and down to their own personal merit.

If Iranian forces invaded Iraq it would be over the air waves faster than a scotch bottle being empty in the oval office. Israel, this Administration would like nothing better for something retarded like this to happen.

I call bullshit to the highest extreme.
