Gay adoption: A new take on the American family
Source: CNN

ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- For 5-year-old Jackson Manford-Roach, Mother's Day means it's time to see his grandmothers.

"I don't need little lace gloves, which is what made this year," Jeffrey Roach, one of Jackson's two fathers, said. "The other kids always ask who he's making the stuff for and he always makes his for his grandma."

Jackson is one of 65,000 adopted children being raised by same-sex parents in the United States, according to a March 2007 report compiled by the Urban Institute and the Williams Institute at University of California at Los Angeles School of Law.

The same report estimates more than 14,100 foster children were living with one or more gay or lesbian foster parent.

4. I am single gay foster parent with 3 teen boys.
My home is often the home of last resort. I never say "no" based on the "history" of the child. How many foster children does James Dobson have again?

5. Good for them
I wish Catholic Charities was still allowed to adopt to gay parents.

7. A gay couple
who are among my most cherished friends. adopted a little boy from the Ukraine a couple of years ago. They adopted a malnourished, needy child, and gave him love, stability, and a sense of belonging.

I've been around my friend's child, and he is quite obviously happy, healthy, and well-adjusted. Being around this family is a delight. Would their child be better off in an institution where he lacked love, and support? I don't think so. I bless the people who adopt little ones who need stable families in order to flourish, and survive.

People are people, and can love regardless of sexual orientation. Children need to be part of a loving family, and there are many gay and lesbian couples who yearn for a child. Nobody on earth could ever convince me that this boy would be better off by staying in an orphanage rather than being adopted, and loved.

12. Unfortunately Ukraine has moved to block such adoptions
They have always barred gay adoptions, but foreigners got around that by adopting as singles and not mentioning their orientation or partners in the home study. For the past year the new director of the adoption ministry in Ukraine has barred all adoptions by single men and most by single women in order to circumvent this loophole. They pushed through legislation that would disallow foreign singles from adopting, and everyone thought it was a done deal until two weeks ago when the president of Ukraine vetoed the legislation.

9. Good to see
A friend of mine is in school for her doctorate in psych. They were covering adoption and she said that there is no valid study that shows gay adoptions are bad for kids, quite the opposite is actually true. I'd always thought that, but it's nice to hear it confirmed! Apparently studies back up common sense.

10. Statistically, LGBT parents are superior
Nothing to do with sexual orientation--adoptive parents are superior for the same reason. If there are barriers to parenthood, such as your regular sex life not leading to pregnancy or infertility, only the most motivated with spend the time and effort to overcome them. The overall incidence of good parenting among fertile straight people is diluted by all the people who really aren't all that interested but do it just because it is expected of them, or an "accident" happens.

13. Interesting...
I really hope it stays this way. I worry that adoption is becoming a fad, and some pathetically immature celibrities will adopt, and then abandon the kid to nannies like kids do 6-12 weeks after they get a live bunny for Easter.

I think AJ knew what she was doing when she adopted Maddox. But I question Madonna's intentions, and the idea of Jen Anniston adopting does not have me clapping my hands.

HOWEVER, I think it would be hard for the worst GLBT adoptive parent to be worse than Ms. Brittany "change diapers on a restaurant dining table and leave the diaper there for the nanny to clean up" Spears.

Sometimes we seriously pay attention to the wrong characteristics of people.

14. Yeah, the millions of dollars Madonna has invested in orphanages
in Africa really shows that her heart's not in it.

15. One of my collegues
and his partner adopted a little girl from Vietnam about a year before my husband and I adopted our little girl from China. Their daughter is one of the happiest, best adjusted children you would ever want to see. He brings her in occassionally and it's a joy to see her to watch her development from a undersized, underfed baby to a strong, happy, well-loved and confident 6 year old. How dare people assume that gay and lesbian singles or couples make poor parents. From what I've seen, just the opposite is the norm.
