CIA DECLASSIFIES ITS UNDERCOVER OPERATIONS IN CHILE

(June 25, 2007) CIA Director Michael Hayden announced last week the release of a 693 page internal report detailing illegal activities the agency carried out between 1950 and 1970. The report includes new information concerning the CIA’s involvement in the 1973 coup that ousted Salvador Allende, then Chile’s socialist president.

The report is known within the agency as “The Family Jewels” and was commissioned in 1973 by the then Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) James R. Schlesinger after the Watergate scandal. It reportedly links the CIA to assassination plots on Chilean Gen. Rene Schneider and lays bare the relationship between the International Telephone and Telegraph (ITT) and the United States government in destabilizing Allende’s governement.

In a 1975 meeting DCI William Colby showed the report to President Gerald Ford and said it was a compilation of “things we should not do.” Colby talked to the president of assassination plans for foreign leaders like Fidel Castro and Patrice Lumumba during which he mentioned Gen. Schneider.

Schneider was head of the Chilean military when Allende’s government won elections in 1970, and although opposed to Allende, he strictly opposed any military involvement in Chile’s political process, as was desired by many right wing groups. Schneider was killed in a botched abduction attempt in October, 1970, creating a somber atmosphere just days before Allende assumed power.

Colby also told Ford in the meeting, “We have another rather dirty problem: after Congress investigated ITT, they said our testimony was not clean. I don’t think we did anything chargeable, but we did skirt the abyss on some cases. There’s an old rule that dictates those who protect their sources can bend the rules.”

(I would like to remind DU'ers who watch Latin American events of the visitor we had to DU who fought like a madman claiming the CIA had nothing whatsoever to do with the coup in Chile, despite everything DU'ers gave him for links, quotes, and gentle admonitions!)

1. Who was that 'visitor'? What did they say? Why would they lie about
the obvious and the well-known? That interests me almost as much as this report (which I wonder if it is 'watered down' or really honest about our involvement in Pinochet overthrow of Allende)

3. Oh, there's always one whenever we post a News story about Chile, Venezuela, Columbia...
...or just about any Country south of Mexico's current Northern Border. They don't stick around very long, and we really aren't allowed to talk about those who are no longer with us.

Rules is Rules.

5. I say "visitor" because he had to leave. Tsk. Tsk.

Here's a prime example of his lock on reality:
That's the very same report you cited, and it says that there's no evidence that the CIA was directly involved in the 1973 coup.

7. After thinking about your question a moment longer, I think I know the answer.
"Why would they lie about the obvious and the well-known?"

I think they lie because they misunderestimate us, and imagine we are all as ignorant as the people with whom they associate. A few of them may know a few facts, but it seems those guys are intent on pulling the wool over their fellow wingers' eyes.

They get the benefit of having the slower ones among them admire them for their storehouse of "knowledge" about things like Chile's history, while they stuff those great big heads full of horsefeathers!

Ignorant people are easy to rally, and to lead, because they don't know any reason why they should doubt what you tell them. At right-wing message boards, it appears from the very little I've seen they all get together and compare their lack of notes, like the blind leading the blind.

8. They lie because they know they won't be
questioned, and even if questioned, they won't be held accountable.

Just Kidding! :hi:

So, have they now finally released the "Family Jewels" or are we still just anticipating the release later in the week?

4. I'm sure that they're a highly sanitized version of the "jewels"....
I don't believe for a second that we've going to get the unvarnished truth from the CIA about anything.

15. Guess what, You're right again! Check it out!
They interviewed the guy who runs the National Security Archives at GW University on NPR today, and he said that some of the pages, pages that have been in the Public Domain for years were part of today's release, and some were more "redacted" than the original, but they did release most of them.

6. Still awaiting news on that. It's bound to be a real page-turner, isn't it?
It would take an invasion from outer space, and desperate terror on their parts to get them to all start babbling the truth about what has actually happened under their direction.

What we know already, even WITH their attempt to keep us all completely baffled, clueless, and "skeered of furriners" is damned ugly, for sure!

We owe it to them to buckle up and just go shopping. Buy things we've never heard of! Be brave! Spend that money for christ, and country. It's what Pat would want us to do.

10. it is a matter of faith over on the right that the CIA coup never happened.
Any evidence to the contrary is ignored. It seems allende deposed himself and then committed suicide by shooting himself in the back with an automatic rifle.

11. Now that Pinochet Is Dead, There's No One to Annoy
and Kissinger isn't going out of the country, anyway, so he's safe.

Maybe this is a foolish attempt to woo back South America from the Evil Democrat Chavez?

12. This report could be a good 101 in CIA techniques
I'm interested not so much in the splashy high profile stuff, interrogation techniques and assassinations, etc., but more the 'boring details', the front companies e.g. International Telephone and Telegraph.

What they were doing then they are doing now.

17. A theory about why they are releasing the "family jewels"
I think that they want to use the lawlessness of CIA's past actions as legal justifications for all of the lawlessness of the *administration. It may not fly in a court of law, but it is all that is needed to muddy the waters for the 28%ers and the pundits will use it as a debating point.
