US House Republicans reject immigration bill
Source: afp

WASHINGTON (AFP) - An influential group of Republicans in the US House of Representatives on Tuesday rejected President George W. Bush's sweeping immigration reform bill -- before even seeing the final product.

The House Republican conference voted by 114 votes to 23 in favor of a resolution expressing opposition to an immigration reform bill which is struggling to pass in the Senate, before being sent to the House.

Democratic leaders in the House have warned Bush he will need to piece together around 70 Republican votes to ensure passage of the bill -- to make up for Democrats from conservative districts who may oppose it.

"Today's vote illustrates overwhelming opposition among Republicans in the House to the Senate immigration bill and the process in which it was developed," said House Republican Pete Hoekstra, who drafted the resolution.

2. Don't blame liberal Democrats...
I gag every time I hear the MSM, etc say that only Republicans are against this Corporate assault on the American middle class. Corporate democrats and Corporate republicans want this bill, NOT THE REST OF US!!!!!!!!! I don't want open borders with a narco state run by corrupt elites and Mexican-Columbian drug cartels.

Its surprising and sad that the Underground Dems are so disinterested in this amnesty bill!

4. Agree!
Country before party.

If Bernie Sanders can figure out that this legislation is just another sop to the mega-transnational corporations, why can't the rest of the progressives in the Congress?

13. Surprised as well...
I hardly ever see discussion about this immigration bill on DU and it's the main issue occupying the Senate right now.

6. What seems so amazing to me right now is that it's the republicans who
are coming out against the administration. The dems are keeping quiet, 'keeping their powder dry'. The damn repubics are looking better every day, the dems are looking like whiney cowards.

Kiss everything goodbye if they keep this up.

14. In spite of all the tripe we hear...
about how the people "want the Republicans and Democrats to work together", that is when I am most frightened. When they agree, it is almost always in order to screw us over.

8. Can a have a brief word with the US Senate? K&R
Edited on Wed Jun-27-07 08:09 AM by Felinity
Why in the World would you want to send another bill to *, for him to add a signing statement saying no one can ever be prosecuted under immigration laws unless he personally says so, and attach funding for him to feed his corporate buds with.

The only thing they should send * should be things he will veto, or things he can't veto. If * wants it, there is somebody getting rich through stealing with it.

Quack Quack Quack. Make him limp.

Edit for typo.

9. I hope everyone is happy with the status quo...
...because that's what we're going to have if no bill passes.

Hey, no skin off my nose, but I find it somewhat puzzling that those who holler the loudest that SOMETHING MUST BE DONE are screaming to kill the only real effort to do something.

10. Yes, we'll end up with just as many undocumented workers.
With very little power to improve their working conditions.

And the immigrant-haters can forget their love affair with "The American Worker" & go back to sneering at "Big Labor."

11. The GOP is positioning itself to take credit for lots of stuff next year
they're going to "bring home the troops", fix immigration, scream about balanced budget, and so on. I hope our geniuses can come up with a way to spin away our FAILURE to do anyting with the majority.
