Questions Raised Over Hiring of Foreigner to Run California GOP
Source: ABC News Blotter

The California Republican party may have broken the law when it recently hired a Canadian to fill a senior director post, experts tell ABC News.

Christopher Matthews, a Canadian, will serve as the party's deputy political director under an immigrant work visa when his tenure begins on Oct. 1, according to the group's spokesman.

But the Federal Election Campaign Act prohibits foreign nationals from having any involvement, direct or indirect, with campaign finances and decision-making powers in a political committee.

Matthews is a foreigner under the law, said Kenneth A. Gross, a Washington, D.C., election law expert and partner at the Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom firm. Gross also served as former associate general counsel of the Federal Election Commission.

Matthews "sounds like he's got a problem," Gross told ABC News.

1. He was hired by a republican...Arnold.......
that's OK. but HIllary received all kinds of criticism from the republicans because she was getting a Canadian to sing a song.

3. Arnold is a member of the GOP
And since he is governor, he is tarnished by the fact that 2 of the top state GOP members are breaking the law.

I remember the speech Arnold gave in 2004 at the Repub National Convention. Arnold said that he regarded Nixon as a hero.

5. There's a big difference
Between saying Arnold is a member of the GOP and saying that Arnold hired the guy.

It's highly dubious any of this will rub off on Arnold. It hasn't so far and the story has been in the news for more than a week.

7. I don't think Arnold will suffer much at all
But if Arnold does run against Boxer for Senator, I think the Dems would be wise to point out that Arnold is representing a party that is very hypocritical when it comes to immigration. Right now most people see Arnold as an Independent, but he isn't an Independent. He is a Republican.

8. I don't see Arnold running for Senate
I don't think Maria will let him. She's pretty much had enough of his politicking.

9. That's exactly what some on DU said about
Arnold running for governor. They said that Maria wouldn't want to see the groping allegations all over the newspapers.

Were you one of the DUers who made that prediction?

12. You are right that we will have to wait and see
I think he will run for Senator. But, of course, I hope that he doesn't.

13. I see him doing it, and so does Sen. Boxer
I received a letter for Sen. Boxer asking for donations some time back. It stated that she needed to be ready to take on what may very well be Arnold and his fund raising ability. The only catch is this, in February CA will vote on ending term limits. If we end term limits, it is expected that Arnold will run again for the Gov. job. If term limits are kept in place, it is expected that Arnold will run against Sen. Boxer because he will be termed out.
