No Bond For Ga. Teen In Sex Case
Source: CBS News/AP

The young Georgia man sentenced to 10 years in prison for receiving oral sex from a 15-year-old girl when he was 17 is not eligible for bond while his appeal moves forward, a judge ruled Wednesday.

Supporters of Genarlow Wilson — including some of the jurors in his trial — protest his sentence, saying it is too harsh for the crime. State lawmakers have since changed the law that put him behind bars for a mandatory 10 years.

The order issued by Douglas County Superior Court Judge David Emerson is likely to mean that Wilson, 21, will remain behind bars for several more months at least. The Georgia Supreme Court is not set to hear his appeal until October. The justices, without explanation, denied a motion by state Attorney General Thurbert Baker to expedite the appeal.

A Monroe County Superior Court judge earlier this month said Wilson should be freed, but Baker's office is appealing.

Ought to throw the butts of the GA AG and this judge in jail and see how they like it.

1. I hope there is an
active move to petition the Governor for a pardon.

This kid's life is already in ruins for doing something pretty much any 17 year old boy would do.

6. I contacted our Governor when the DA issued his appeal to this
young man getting out of prison. I received an answer from him stating that the Gov. of Ga. doesn't have the ability to issue pardons. This State, as well as quite a number of others have a Board of Pardons that handles all those.

Whey the dummy didn't seem to understand was that I didn't originally ask him to PARDON him, but to contact HIS DA and tell him to back off the BS! As far as I know, the DA DOES work directly for the Governor!

I fel so bad for this young man, and I really fault the State Legislature for not making the law retro!

16. Well, the AG is claiming Wilson refusing a deal offered to him.
I think Wilson might want to reconsider that.

25. F that! his conviction was thrown out!
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 06:17 AM by lynnertic
This 'deal' talk is BS - well I'm full of BS because I'm trumpeting without knowing what the 'deal' is. But any 'deal' at this point, IMO, has nothing to do with protecting the citizens of Georgia or with rehabilitating Wilson. It's a power play, someone trying to get a score for their trial record or reelection or whatever.

PATHETIC!

If the conviction is thrown out then he should be free, simple as that. What he did is no longer a felony in Georgia but a midemeanor and he spent 2+ years in jail for it ALREADY.

I had an adult recently
Who pled guilty to child rape (I think it was consensual not sure, but he was well into his 20s or 30s) and got 10 years probation.

Yikes. Just reflecting back to my high school days.

I'm curious, was the "victim" white? I mean, this is the south ya know and he's black. This is messed up regardless.

12. No, I don't think she was. He was actually convicted on Ga. law
AT THE TIME! The law has been since changed to make it a misdemeanor, but the legislature didn't make it retro. THAT'S what's causing all the trouble. THAT, and a very overly agressive attorney...who BTW is black! This one isn't racial folks. It's just plain stupidity!

18. They don't want to make it retro because that would mean others
and not just Wilson would be eligible. They can't make it retro for just Wilson alone.

situation, but CNN reported that the Ga. law was changed BECAUSE of this case.

19. It Is When It Was Zellout Who Appointed Him In The First Place
If it's a Negro keeping those Negroes in line, then the white folks won't have anything to worry about, right?

BTW, how many months did that white Georgia teacher get for having sex with her student?

Oh right, three.
