Russia kills ex-Guantanamo inmate
Source: Reuters

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian special forces shot dead a former Guantanamo Bay inmate in southern Russia on Wednesday, the FSB security service said, describing him as an extremist.

The FSB said Ruslan Odizhev had been shot along with another man in Nalchik, the capital of the tiny North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, but gave no further details.

"Odizhev was an active member of a regional extremist operation," the FSB press office said.

Odizhev, born in 1973, was included in a report earlier this year by the New York-based Human Rights Watch on the alleged abuse in Russia of seven former inmates of the Guantanamo Bay prison after Washington handed them back to Moscow in 2004.

1. Do you think GITMO might have given him a 'tude?

I think so.

Drinking that formaldahyde laced beer made me vow never to go back unless I was a civilian on a diving expedition.

2. "Russia kills?" Strange headline.
I don't ever see headline "US Kills..." It's always "US Army" or whatever actual groups is killing. I think this is anti-Russia.

3. The story is what it is.
The headline doesnt matter, it's the facts. And facts dont slant.

4. Oh, I do agree.
I think that it would be entirely appropriate to say "US Kills 14 Iraqi Children," for instance. I just want the playing field even. Indeed, it is true that countries and people are responsible for the actions of their states.

5. Good point indeed
And not withstanding the fact that official relations between Russia and US have gone sour in recent days.

That headline is in poor taste, more for the simple-minded, though. "Russia" can't kill anyone, anymore than "Germany" killed the Jews or "America" killed the Indians. "America "includes things like the ACLU, and they aren't pulling the triggers on dissidents.

Better to identify the government or quasi-gov. agencies who have the guns and really do pull the triggers. A police or military agency or a 'national security' detachment. The Gestapo. Or a plain old-fashioned paramilitary death squad.
