LOS ANGELES, June 27 (Reuters) - Three supermarket operators and the unions that represent their workers in Southern California resumed negotiations on Wednesday, in a bid to avoid a strike authorized by labor over the weekend.

The dispute over wages and health benefits has gone on since March. But on Sunday, workers at Kroger Co.'s (KR.N: Quote, Profile, Research) Ralphs chain, and Safeway Inc.'s (SWY.N: Quote, Profile, Research) Vons and Pavilions units gave their local unions the power to call a strike if needed. Workers at Supervalu Inc.'s (SVU.N: Quote, Profile, Research) Albertsons stores authorized a potential strike in March.

"We are resuming negotiations today and they'll continue Thursday and Friday," said Brad Chase, a spokesman for the grocers.

A spokesman for the local United Food and Commercial Workers unions also confirmed that talks had resumed.

2. If only they could get unions into retail
That would make a serious dent in the GOP!
