Romney's Cruel Canine Vacation
Source: TIME Magazine

The reporter intended the anecdote that opened part four of the Boston Globe's profile of Mitt Romney to illustrate, as the story said, "emotion-free crisis management": Father deals with minor — but gross — incident during a 1983 family vacation, and saves the day. But the details of the event are more than unseemly — they may, in fact, be illegal.

The incident: dog excrement found on the roof and windows of the Romney station wagon. How it got there: Romney strapped a dog carrier — with the family dog Seamus, an Irish Setter, in it — to the roof of the family station wagon for a twelve hour drive from Boston to Ontario, which the family apparently completed, despite Seamus's rather visceral protest.

Massachusetts's animal cruelty laws specifically prohibit anyone from carrying an animal "in or upon a vehicle, or otherwise, in an unnecessarily cruel or inhuman manner or in a way and manner which might endanger the animal carried thereon." An officer for the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals responded to a description of the situation saying "it's definitely something I'd want to check out." The officer, Nadia Branca, declined to give a definitive opinion on whether Romney broke the law but did note that it's against state law to have a dog in an open bed of a pick-up truck, and "if the dog was being carried in a way that endangers it, that would be illegal." And while it appears that the statute of limitations has probably passed, Stacey Wolf, attorney and legislative director for the ASPCA, said "even if it turns out to not be against the law at the time, in the district, we'd hope that people would use common sense...Any manner of transporting a dog that places the animal in serious danger is something that we'd think is inappropriate...I can't speak to the accuracy of the case, but it raises concerns about the judgment used in this particular situation."

Ingrid Newkirk, president of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, was less circumspect. PETA does not have a position on Romney's candidacy per se, but Newkirk called the incident "a lesson in cruelty that was ... wrong for to witness...Thinking of the wind, the weather, the speed, the vulnerability, the isolation on the roof, it is commonsense that any dog who's under extreme stress might show that stress by losing control of his bowels: that alone should have been sufficient indication that the dog was, basically, being tortured." Romney, of course, has expressed support for the use of "enhanced interrogation" techniques when it comes to terrorists; his campaign did not return repeated calls and emails about the treatment of his dog...

And it never occurred to him to be concerned or care. The dog was property, luggage.

113. It's never
too late for Romney; for the dog however unfortunately it is. They could still hoist his fat butt up on the family car, strap and gag the worthless piece of crap to it and take a few vacation spins around the nation during the sweltering heat. I hear the Grand Canyon is a lovely place to visit this time of year. hehehehe.

It's the Boston Globe after all. I doubt that Romney to this day sees any problem with what he did and the reporter picked up on that.

in a movie based on this trip?

Ah yes, Mitt Romney--traveling transAmerica in the family truckster---with
a dog dragging behind the bumper and his wife's dead aunt tied to the roof.

Does Romney's wife know her husband has a thing for pool waitresses?

And what about Cousin Eddy--is that plate in his head still troubling him?

116. I totally agree with you...
Anyone who can treat animals with total disregard--is also likely to treat
human beings with total disregard.

I've read many studies that demonstrate that serial killers abused animals
as children. That's because animals (and sometimes younger children) are
the young person's only potential for prey. As psychopaths and serial
killers age, they are able to victimized adults as well. Scary stuff.

If someone is so insensitive and lacking in compassion, when it comes to
animals--I have a hard time believing that they treat human beings (especially
children) any better.

I concur with you. I guess we should all remember though, that Clark Griswold
accidentally tied that dog to the bumper and dragged it for miles. Romney made
a conscious decision to behave like a crass, compassion-lacking oaf.

BTW, my stupid asshole Republican boss (I've referred to him in a few posts) bought a hamster for his children a few months ago. Well, the hamster got really sick. He wouldn't eat, so boss's wife tried feeding it with a bottle - but to no avail. Not only would boss not take the poor animal in for treatment, he wouldn't take him in to be put down, either. "He'll die eventually; no way am I spending money taking a HAMSTER to the vet", said the asshole. The asshole is very rich, I might add, and lives in a gated community. Man, did I ever let him have it! Didn't help, he still let the poor thing die a slow death.

Thank God I finally put in my notice, and will be free of that f*cker once and for all!:bounce:

97. Welcome to DU, muffin1!
My middle child wanted a guinea pig for a pet when he was 5 (14 yrs. old now) and it got sick. We took it to the vet who had to consult books, make phone calls, etc., anyway, we ended up with medicine and a powder that I had to mix with Caro syrup every 3 hrs! I thought that I was back in the days of having a newborn infant and it was a long haired guinea pig so he had to be washed up because of the sticky, yucky mess. He pulled through just fine though. I can't imagine someone who won't even take an animal to the vet to try to determine what is wrong with it and to euthanize the animal when necessary.

Good luck on your new job! :hi:

Obviously and predictably, the animal totally panicked. Also, station wagons have plenty of room to have a dog ride INSIDE the car - particularly if the LUGGAGE was put in a luggage carrier strapped to the top.

80. I had 2 Irish Setter hounds in the 70s
...before they were completely inbred and stupid. Those dogs slept on the bed with me, lay down in the bathroom when I soaked in the tub, sprawled across my lap when I watched TV (not that I could see any shows with red tails wagging in my face) and ran trails with me every day. Point I'm making: I was a teenager back then, and if my father had tied them onto the roof, I would have refused to go anywhere, I would have held those dogs on my lap and sat on the floor of the car if that's what it took.

So, yeah, Romney is a hateful psychopathic bastard, but WTF is wrong with kids who let their beloved pet be treated in such a heinous fashion? Is the whole family fucked up or what????

It's the autocratic conservatism that you're blaming, not the religion itself (not that I'm a big fan of the religion, either, but still).

I remember going to a Kerry rally, and meeting a lot of coworkers who I knew to be Mormon, who also swore me to secrecy that they'd been there.

I guess the point I'm trying to make isn't that Mitt Romney is an asshole because he's a Mormon, he's an asshole because he thinks it's perfectly okay to lash an Irish Setter to the top of a station wagon.

Unspeakable cruelty is apparently lodged deep in the DNA of Republican "leaders". This story reveals Romney as a heartless prick, rather like Giuliani. No wonder Republicans don't like their choices for president! I don't either.

Can't have stem cell research or embrace the scientific fact of evolution, but we can strap a goddamn dog to the roof of a goddamn car. I swear the current crop of Republican candidates is the biggest gaggle of feckless buffoons ever assembled in the history of the United States, and is to a man a towering disgrace to the nation. "We were terrible to animals," recalled Mr. Throckmorton, laughing. A dip behind the Bush home turned into a small lake after a good rain, and thousands of frogs would come out.

"Everybody would get BB guns and shoot them," Mr. Throckmorton said. "Or we'd put firecrackers in the frogs and throw them and blow them up."

99. Oh my. Thank you for the extremely enlightening article
Between the segregated and intolerant small town and the casual (his buddy describing the incidents in the article "laughed") animal torture, everything is explained.

I grew up in a town a lot like that. Fortunately, I had a subscription to Highlights and all the Scholastic books I wanted, which I betcha a nickel Georgie didn't!

(I still had a racist dad--he didn't know what was *in* those books and magazines; he just knew they were supposed to be good for kids. Well, they were.)

As to the small-aminal torturing, there is evidence linking that to adult crime and mental disorders:

98. You're right. Animals would make more of an impression with the U.S. electorate
Ewan MacColl wrote a great song discussing this phenomenon(he was covering it in the UK,and people's lack of reaction to such events as the then-fascist junta in Greece and the abuses people suffered under apartheid compared to their visceral anger over animal suffering, but it applies here)

Here's some of the lyrics(copyright 1968 Ewan MacColl Ltd.)

"When Greeks were being tortured then we always held our piece
We used to like to spend our summer holidays in Greece
Cats and ponies, budgies, moths and hairy caterpillars
Lousy Europeans can't appreciate the pleasure that these little creatures give us
We're A Nation of Animal Lovers

When there's hangings in South Africa we just avert our gaze
But we're tender hearted to a fault with alley-cats and strays
Remember how the nation nearly had a nervous spasm
Breathlessly anticipating giant pandas' pleasure in a cuddly orgasm
We're A Nation of Animal Lovers

When there's rioting in Brixton we're impressively impassive
But be cruel to a horse and our reaction then is massive
Guinea pigs and painted terrapin, tropical fishes-
Lesser races cannot understand that it would meet with all our wishes
If there were no human beings".

(Not to say what Mitt did wasn't evil and twisted, but it's true, if Mitt had done this to his Mexican maid, nobody but us woulda cared.)

77. One of my dogs ran away this morning
My dogs -- I have four of them -- are my family, and the idea of someone treating a dog the way Romney did is the equivalent to me of someone treating their child that way. I can't imagine anyone older than, say, eight thinking that this was a good way to transport a family pet. Romney's behavior with Seamus is simply unforgivable.

Thanks to a kind neighbor and an ID tag with a phone number on it, I got the rabbit-chasing, fence-climbing, happily wandering beagle-shepherd mix back, but only after two frantic hours of worrying that she'd either get hit by a car or run into a pack of unfriendly coyotes.

102. Has anybody figured out that he was probably SMUGGLING this dog into Canada?

Every international crossing i have seen has limits on the animals that can go back and forth. The Niagra crossing to Canada is no different.

Unless Romney had some pretty involved paperwork, (or he bribed a guard) the dog would have had to stay in 30 days of quarantine.

And even if he had the paperwork I find it HIGHLY unlikely that any border guard would have let them into Canada if the guard had seen how the dog was secured to the roof.

Once you add this up, (and there are records for these border crossings that go back a long way) the story sounds almost made up.

Either that or the Romney kid just outed his dad as a Smuggler.

119. Scientists Say Dog Likely Experienced Wind-Whipped, Uncomfortable Trip
(snip)

What Happens to a Dog on a Roof Traveling 50 MPH?

(snip)

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Douglas Osheroff of physics at Stanford University said the dog crate on top of the car would change the air flow around the vehicle.

"Beyond a certain velocity, the air flow becomes turbulent," said Osheroff. "The airflow isn't going to be laminar," which means it won't have a uniform distribution.

Cumming said that's bad news for Seamus.

"Chances are the windshield would only protect the front of the dog, but the air flowing around the windshield would buffet the side of the dog -- that would be tiring," said Cummings. "My wife's a vet, and she would be more worried by the dehydration of the dog's eyes under those conditions."
