Car bomb kills 22, wounds 40 in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, June 28 (Reuters) - A car bomb killed 22 people
and wounded 40 on Thursday at an intersection in Baghdad
where minibuses pick up and drop off passengers, Iraqi
police said.

They said the explosion took place in the mainly Shi'ite
district of Bayaa, in southwestern Baghdad. The area has
been a frequent target of bomb attacks.

Police said around 40 vehicles had been set ablaze by the
bomb, which went off during the morning rush hour.

Mortar bombs also slammed into the commercial area of
Shorja in central Baghdad, killing at least two people
and wounding 14, police said.

BAGHDAD (AP) - Twenty beheaded bodies were discovered Thursday
on the banks of the Tigris River southeast of Baghdad, two Iraqi
police officers said.

The dead - all men aged 20 to 40 years old - had their hands and
legs bound, and some of the heads were found next to the bodies,
the officers said on condition of anonymity because they were not
authorized to release the information.

The bodies were found in the Sunni Muslim village of Um al-Abeed,
near the city of Salman Pak, which lies 14 miles southeast of Baghdad.

BAGHDAD - A car bomb killed 25 people and wounded 40 at an
intersection in a Shi'ite area of southern Baghdad where
minibuses pick up and drop off passengers, Iraqi police said.

* BAGHDAD - A car bomb killed at least five people and wounded
11 others as it targeted a long queue of cars waiting for petrol
in western Baghdad's Mansour district, police said. 16 cars were
burnt in the blast.
