Gore Calls For 90% CO2 Reduction
Former VP aims to inspire individual and worldwide action

Vice President Al Gore and Live Earth founder Kevin Wall will call for a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions worldwide by mid-century in a press conference today in Manhattan.

Gore and Wall will unveil the Live Earth Cal To Action – aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions 90% by 2050.

That percentage is far beyond the goals being considered in the United States, and under international frameworks. Gore called for a new international treaty on global warming by 2009.

“Nations all over the world are making progress in tackling the climate crisis. But too many proposals fall short of the strong, decisive action that’s needed,” Gore said in a press release handed out before the press conference. “Individual nations alone cannot solve this crisis. The nations of the world must join together as one if we are to succeed.”

8. Not nearly as many casualties as there will be if we don't do this
What Gore is suggesting is what needs to be done, baby steps will not fix the problem. Hell, even this huge step Gore is proposing won't fix the problem, but it will at least help to alleviate the problem.

9. Now we're talking.
That's a serious reduction. We really have to change our energy habits quickly, especially now that China has recently surpassed the U.S. as number one CO2 emitter. If the rest of the world emulates the U.S., we're toast.

10. It's easy to throw out numbers...
but how does anyone realistically propose to cut emissions by 90%? Basically, that would mean everyone giving up their cars, air conditioning, heating, etc. Anyone willing to throw away their modern lives and go back to living like medieval serfs?

12. It shows the enormity of the problem.

It shows that a slight increase in fuel economy over the next 10 years isn't going to do it.

It shows that an immediate reevaluation of what we think life needs to be like is in order.

Serfdom isn't needed.

But a very hard look at why we are ok with 30mpg is needed.
Why we're ok with pouring concrete over farmland,
why we're bulldozing trees for junk mail,
why we're using paper cups for the 4 cups of coffee that many people drink every day,
Why we need to travel so far, so often, just because.

There are so many things that could be done to reduce the damage that is done on a daily basis. But actions need to be made on a massive scale.

14. It won't be serfdom. If we don't start taking steps it will be! The wealthy will be high on the hog
they will have the resources to buy themselves a golden parachute. everyone else will be scrabbling to get by just like in the bad old days. we have a better shot at keeping a decent standard of living if people start paring down now learning to live with such horrors as cloths lines instead of clothsdryers. Not long ago a NYTimes article said that if everyone in the US would use clothslines for only 1/2 the year it would save 3.3% of our total energy usage.

So 90% reduction scares the marrow out of people's bones. Start smaller. Do the easy changes. Then do some tougher ones. See how close you can get. Check out groups Riot for Austerity http://simplereduce.wordpress.com/riot-for-austerity90-rules & http://groups.yahoo.com/group/90PercentReduction Then keep on pushing local, state, and federal government to reduce themselves and require businesses to do the same. For example we would need less power for heat and cooling if houses had higher standards for insulation to begin with. get more public transportation going in urban areas. educate people so they think about where and what they buy comes from like that hanes underware made by sweatshop child labor in bangladesh ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTIfY9SmJdA ) shipped halfway across the world to their local souless megamart.

15. Strong and decisive
But not until over 40 years down the line.

Throw in a couple billion people expecting more in India and China(and everywhere else since we have to make it fair), and it's not as if we're going to use less energy here. We're going to use more of it, and it will alter more of our habitat.

16. I think this indicates Al will never run for office again.
The 90% recommendation is so anti-science, and so plainly made as an easily-refuted exaggeration (i.e., lie) that Gore cannot recover from this. He's not running for anything, IMO.

17. that's not what the article says
The first sentence reads:

Vice President Al Gore and Live Earth founder Kevin Wall called for a 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from the world’s developed nations by mid-century in a press conference Thursday at the Hearst Tower in Manhattan.

He is calling for a 50% reduction worldwide, not 90%.

Maybe they corrected it.
