Egyptian 'spy for Israel' found dead outside London flat
Source: Guardian

Ashraf Marwan, the son-in-law of the former Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser and a suspected spy for Israel, has been found dead outside his central London flat in "unexplained" circumstances.

The well-connected financier is believed to have fallen from a fourth-floor balcony in Carlton House Terrace overlooking St James's Park.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard could not confirm the man's name but said: "The death is being treated as unexplained."

The 62-year-old grandfather died amid controversy about his role in the intelligence and business worlds. Mr Marwan, who had also been a member of former Egyptian president Anwar Sadat's inner circle, was suspected of tipping off the Israelis about the start of the Yom Kippur war in 1973.

1. Wow, when he married Mona, that was like a royal wedding....

Fallen from a balcony, eh?

There's only a few explanations, there:

He jumped.

He was pushed.

He took ill and fainted, or otherwise "accidentally" went over the rail.

3. Actually, he was probably an Egyptian double agent.
Edited on Thu Jun-28-07 05:49 PM by Hand
Marwan almost certainly did supply Israeli intelligence with a date and time for the Egyptian offensive across the Suez Canal in 1973, but only after much delaying and claims that no attack was in the offing. The information he did supply was accurate only as to the date--the time, crucially, was four hours later than actually occurred.

He was described as a "walk-in" intelligence source; that is, he came to the Israeli embassy in London and offered his services, which was in itself cause for suspicion. Eventually he became a trusted agent for Mossad, but a lot of evidence points to him being part of Anwar Sadat's deception strategy leading up to the 1973 October War, all of which succeeded far better than anyone would have imagined. Marwan was later described as "the Egyptian James Bond" for his role.

4. Ah, I see. So people were just looking for some explanation
and decided, must've been "the Egyptians" who offed him. It's hard to believe he'd have been left unmolested for 25 years if he'd really crossed them that much, in a way.

5. Eggs-ackly.
Marwan had enough shady stuff going on in the commercial world to cook his goose many times over. If he'd been a bona fide Mossad agent, he'd have been bumped off long ago.
