British draft compromise on Iran

By GEORGE JAHN, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 21 minutes ago

VIENNA, Austria - The U.S. and its allies are reviewing a
proposal that would commit the U.N. Security Council to hold
off on new sanctions on Iran if the country stops further
development of its uranium enrichment program, diplomats
said Friday.

The public stance by Washington and its key backers remains
a full enrichment freeze — Iran not only would have to stop
expanding its capacities, but also would need to stop
reprocessing of nuclear material and building equipment used
for that process.

But the review reflects a potential compromise by accepting
Iran's relatively advanced enrichment program — at least
initially — in exchange for renewed multilateral negotiations
that aim at a long-term freeze and a rollback of the activity.

Diplomats told The Associated Press earlier this month that
while the United States remained opposed, the idea was being
informally discussed among Britain, France and Germany as a
possible way of ending the deadlock over enrichment and
permitting a resumption of talks on the issue.

4. Perhaps Britain, France and the U.S. could stop enrichment too?
I know, pie in the sky. Still, it doesn't hurt to point out hypocrisy.

7. Perhaps ahmadinejad will stop playing into the hands of the right wing ?
By saying things about Israel that might give the impression he'd be happy to destroy it.

I can't recall certainly France saying such things about a nation in the recent past.

Iran reviews nuclear "time out" idea: official

Sun Jul 1, 5:58 AM ET

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran is reviewing a "time out" proposal
to stop its uranium enrichment expansion in return for a halt
to further U.N. sanctions, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said
on Sunday.

In Vienna, a senior diplomat said world powers were debating
the idea of offering Iran a pause to end the row over its
atomic plans, which the West says is aimed at building
nuclear bombs.

Iran has so far refused any such step, saying its nuclear
work is purely civilian and legal.

"It (the proposal) has nothing new ... It has been discussed
in the past. But Iran is still reviewing the proposal,"
spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini told a weekly news
conference.

6. EU will have to pony up some petrol to get the Iranians to bite
They will also have to subsidize Irans social programs in order to get UN seals and security cameras put on Irans reactor projects.
