CIA spied on left-wing Canadians in '60s, '70s: documents

B.C. professor monitored in spy operation calls it 'utterly shameful'

The Central Intelligence Agency spied on Canadians critical of the Vietnam War during the late 1960s and '70s in an operation code-named "MH Chaos," CBC News has learned.


The CIA operation was aimed at 'sabotaging public opposition to U.S. policy.'

CBC News found out about the surveillance program's activities north of the border after obtaining declassified CIA documents.

According to the files, MH Chaos was a parallel undertaking to the CIA's "Operation Chaos," a domestic program that kept tabs on left-wing activity on U.S. college campuses.

The agency developed a network of informants on Canadian campuses in the late 1960s and had reports sent down from Ottawa to the CIA's headquarters at Langley, Va.

What I find astonishing is that anyone is learning anything new here. If you were involved in the antiwar movement you most likely have a file and at least one person you knew was working for one of the DC intelligence agencies or another.

6. Thank you. Anyone even tangentially involved in any Vietnam War

protests, civil rights protests, etc., knows darn well what all these bastards were doing -- the off-campus guy nobody knew who showed up at the rally and urged everyone to throw rocks; the "kids" who came to class a few times and hung around on campus, but didn't seem to have to do homework or work after school; etc., etc.

They were all over the damn place, and every organization warned its members about them. It was NOT news, and it is not news now. In fact, I'm sure the tactics, methods, and intentions are much more developed now, 35 years later.

They spied on the left in every country in which they operated. They used proxies in other cases. They also spied on the right and even their firmest supporters. Everyone was spied on, it goes without saying.
