Furor Erupts Over Muslim Football Teams' Names

IRVINE, Calif. -- A furor has erupted over the names chosen by teams in a Muslim football league in Southern California.

Three of the teams have called themselves the Intifada, the Soldiers of Allah and the Mujahideen.



Critics say such names glorify terrorism.

Intifada means "uprising" in Arabic and is a term used by Palestinians for their revolts against the Israeli occupation.

Mujahideen means "holy warrior," and is associated with several Islamic groups that are on the U.S. list of terrorist organizations.

The uproar has caused some teams to change their names and some team members to quit because they fear violence against them.

2. Remember when America LOVED the Mujahedeen?

Of course, that was in another time...another nation.

The Old American Republic is likely no more. It died on Dec 12, 2000.

And thus, for an Orwellian-Totalitarian Empire, the answer to a history qeustion must be, "I will answer when I am told what the answer is supposed to be."

I'm a Washington football fan, so I know this discussion well.

The people who support the mascot of the Washington NFL franchise, say things like, "Redskins is just a name. It's not serious." and "Chill out. It's it's just a game."

Looks like the mascots are taken seriously, though, huh.... when white people don't like the names.

There are a bunch of teams named "Crusaders" around. There used to be a pro basketball franchise named "Conquistidors."

They have no shame.

9. Back in the days of the WHA

the Cleveland franchise was called the Crusaders. The great goalie for the Boston Bruins, Gerry Cheevers, originally came up to pro hockey with the Crusaders organization.

I went to college with a foaming at the mouth right winger. After graduation, he went on to coach a little league soccer team. He named the team, "The Contras".
