Two British soldiers die in Iraq

A British soldier in Iraq has been killed during fighting
in Basra involving 1,000 troops, the Ministry of Defence
has said.

Soldiers came under attack from machine gun and rocket-
propelled grenades, and encountered several roadside
bombs.

The dead soldier - in a Warrior vehicle patrol in the
Tuninah district - was hit by an improvised explosive
device. Next of kin have yet to be informed.

In a separate incident, a soldier has died in an accident
on a Basra base.

British soldiers come under heavy attack in southern
Iraq, casualties reported

The Associated Press
Published: July 7, 2007

BAGHDAD: British troops were hit by heavy attacks with
bombs, rocket-propelled grenades and gunfire in the
southern city of Basra, killing one soldier and wounding
three, the British military said Saturday.

The troops came under "a large number of attacks" while
conducting operations overnight that arrested several
people in Basra, the military statement said. Coalition
warplanes destroyed roadside bombs from the air as the
troops were extracted from the city, it said.

The statement said one soldier was killed and that one of
the three injured was seriously wounded.

Separately, the military announced that a British soldier
of Fijian origin died Friday in an accident at a British
base in Basra palace. It said the accident was being
investigated.
