(Fred) Thompson lobbied for abortion-rights group, it says
Source: Los Angeles Times

A spokesman for the GOP presidential hopeful says he did no such work. An ex-colleague calls the denial 'bizarre.'

By Michael Finnegan, Times Staff Writer
July 7, 2007

Fred D. Thompson, who is campaigning for president as an antiabortion Republican, accepted an assignment from a family-planning group to lobby the first Bush White House to ease a controversial abortion restriction, according to a 1991 document and several people familiar with the matter.

A spokesman for the former Tennessee senator denied that Thompson did the lobbying work. But the minutes of a 1991 board meeting of the National Family Planning and Reproductive Health Assn. say that the group hired Thompson that year.

His task was to urge the administration of President George H. W. Bush to withdraw or relax a rule that barred abortion counseling at clinics that received federal money, according to the records and to people who worked on the matter.

(snip)

But Judith DeSarno, who was president of the family planning association in 1991, said Thompson lobbied for the group for several months. Minutes from the board's meeting of Sept. 14, 1991 — a copy of which DeSarno gave to The Times — say: "Judy reported that the association had hired Fred Thompson Esq. as counsel to aid us in discussions with the administration" on the abortion counseling rule.

2. new meaning to Drop Dead Fred...hee hee hee
The creepy anti-choicers have got to be upset by this, right, and will stop calling him "reaganesque"?

I hope this makes him and his campaign out to be a "never was". Drop Dead Fred, indeed.

3. Lobbyists are whores
who will service whoever has a grubby $20 (million) bill in his hand. And situational moralists like James Dobson and Pat Robertson will not let this affect their support for any GOP candidate

4. I hope they have some signed-off billing records
or something similar to prove the claim. Nail the stupid fucker for doing it and then nail him again for lying about it.

Of course, the Right is amazingly skilled at ignoring things they'd rather not see. :eyes:

5. He's a crooked lying snitch. Who cares? He's pro choice? HE'S GONE!
maybe. Giuliani seems to be leapfrogging that issue because being crooked is so much more important to republicans.

8. I'm not sure if it's better for us if he runs or doesn't run...
either way this guy is a total sleeze and the deal where he called Nixon to warn him on what the investigative committee had found out about the taping system means that Thompson is probably just as culpible for the 18 missing minutes as Nixon was! It proves to me he had no morals, no ethics, and couldn't be trusted to guard his mother's purse. And THIS is who they want for president? I LOVE the part where Nixon is quoted as thinking Thompson is "not very smart" and "dumb as hell". I guess that is why the freepers think Thompson is "reaganesque" meaning senile and "dumb as hell" and more than a little sleepy...

What to do? What to do? What a quandary? Now who are they going to vote for. All their tier #1 candidates were/are pro choice.

7. So was "Slick Willard" Romney.
Funny how Repugs screamed about Kerry being a "flip flopper" in 2004, yet look at how many of them are actually flip floppers. :eyes: Even Bush is a HUGE flip flopper!

Ah well, what would Republicans do if they weren't projecting?
