Live Earth 'breaks streaming record'
Edited on Sat Jul-07-07 09:41 PM by cal04
Source: From correspondents in New Jersey

THE Live Earth global pop concerts have broken a record for an online entertainment show by generating more than nine million internet streams, Microsoft web portal MSN said.

As the last two of the nine Live Earth concerts got under way in the US and Brazil, MSN product manager Karin Muskopf said the number of streams had surpassed the previous record held by 2005's Live 8 global concerts to fight poverty.

"We have exceeded any other online entertainment event," Mr Muskopf said. "It's really exciting to see the enthusiasm for the concert."

An internet stream is when a person watches on a computer. People can stream an event more than once - by switching it on and off - so nine million streams does not necessarily mean nine million people watching, MSN said.

I've been here on and off all day - except that we went out to get a bite to eat a few hours ago. That only took an hour or so. Well, we'll enjoy it together.

6. I'm in the streaming biz and this is really impressive.
It's not just the number of viewers, but the quality of the stream (especially audio) mine hasn't even 'buffered' once since Australia.

I'd like to see a calculation of how many Gigs of data were sent to deliver this stream to 9 million people.

17. XM Radio had the concert on four of five channels-- each a different location- amazing
I was driving and listening live to the concert in China, then the UK, then Rio, then the US team who filled in with some playbacks of earlier bands, then back to somewhere else = every station had a different country-- it was really quite extraordinary.

When Melissa Etheridge spoke about Al Gore as being her hero for being a truth-teller and how when he tried to tell the truth the first time, people told him they "didn't want to listen and they told him it wasn't the right time to talk about these things so he tried to keep quiet. But that he couldn't keep quiet for too long and he just kept trying to tell the story- the truth until finally people started to listen. Or something like that- it was so touching (they didn't play this it on the NBC TV Cut which is very sad).

Anyway, there I was driving and weeping- and when she introduced Al Gore, I was so moved and so happy for him and for all of us because he really is doing it-- the right way.

This man is changing the world in a way that perhaps had he become President, he might not have been able to do so drmatically...

I really feel that this is a pretty historic event. Truly amazing.

This is as true as taking on line unscientific poll;

Open and close,open and close.....turn off/on the computer, I do it all the time. Chances are if the US net watchers were completely taken out of the equation, the # would be in the hundreds of thousands. Nowhere near the 2 billion hoped for. That is something they could have gone into more detail as we ethnocentric types in the US should come out of our ivory (computer) towers and read non US opinions

What matters is what the world thinks of those behind organizing the world event;

...
snip

John Buckley of Carbon Footprint, an organization that helps companies reduce their carbon dioxide emissions, said Saturday that Live Earth will produce about 74,500 tons of the gas.

"We would have to plant 100,000 trees to offset the effect of Live Earth," he said, speaking by telephone. But, he added,

"if you can reach 2 billion people and raise awareness,
that's pretty fantastic."

Certainly, on the way into the show, some of the 65,000 people who'd spent $110 on a ticket appeared unaware of the
seven-point pledge that Al Gore, the event's chief impresario, had asked all spectators to make. Asked about it, they offered blank looks and said they were there for Madonna (whose annual carbon footprint, according to Buckley, is 1,018 tons -- about 92 times the 11 tons an average person uses per year).

I'm not even sure who Gore is," said Georgie Simpson, 35, from Ipswich, in eastern England. "I saw Gore on TV," added Sue Bourner, 38, a health service manager from Hampshire. "But frankly,

I think it's cheeky of Americans to come over here and lecture us.
They are the worst polluters."

The #'s for Live Aid in 1985 reached 1.5 billion and raised funds to get food to a starving African nation.
In 2005, LIVE 8 AID concerts were watched by 3.8 billion;

snip
Throughout the concerts, viewers were urged to donate money to the Live Aid cause. Three hundred phone lines were manned by the BBC, so that members of the public could make donations using their credit cards. The phone number and an address that viewers could send cheques to were repeated every twenty minutes

the goal then was to end famine in Ethiopia.......

That same Ethiopia now has troops in Sudan........
... where the starving masses in the Da fur region may or may not be considered victims of a genocide by the UN yet.

We (in the west) used music,( decadent music ), to raise funds to feed parts of the world who curse our decadent music and what happens ? ;

snip
Some consider Live 8 to be a success, including Bob Geldof himself. However, others believe it was a publicity stunt and a failure as the G8 have already forgotten their pledges. <16> Geldof also believes that public attention was quickly diverted by the London bombings on 7 July, the day after Live 8 Edinburgh which was the final concert in the series.

Well, if you think about it,

http://www.live8live.com/whathappened/

HORN OF AFRICA FOOD CRISIS
The Horn of Africa, which includes Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia and Sudan, is facing severe food and water shortages due to the prolonged drought throughout the region. The crisis is affecting more than 15 million people.

Lack of water and sanitation and people fleeing their homes increases the risk of communicable diseases such as cholera, typhoid fever, diarrhoea, acute respiratory infections and measles.

we actually make matters worse for all concerned in less than one generation of generous,thoughtfull well intentioned aid.

I don't know about North Africa, but if they've been having a drought has been for 20 years now, I would suspect climate change. Of course, these are also population wars, too many people with not enough resources, including water. And the droughts in Australia don't look good.

So, the sooner we increase awareness of our carbon emissions, the sooner we may avoid catastrophic droughts, or floods as may happen. Since the politicians (and MSM) fail to act on it, a global PR campaign is required. The problems are larger than just climate change, but I think that's the best focus to get the ball rolling. Sustainable economics, sustainable population, and renewable energy are all interconnected problems that we will have to solve also. And awareness at the world level is required to make these changes.

As far as cutting down trees for media, remember the NYT uses 35 acres for each Sunday edition. And that kind of media does a lot of damage, like most of the MSM. Also, sometimes we need to cut down trees to create awareness. So, plant them back in a sustainable way. The carbon is recycled unlike burning fossil fuel.

20. "peak population" has reached the tipping point for the earth
I don't think the African eco system can support the human population living and exploiting its surface anymore. Most likely the tipping point happened a few decades ago and soon, those nations will be fighting water wars because of it. But who will the fault fingers point to?

btw,
I doubt global warming caused snow to fall in Argentina today, first time in 90 years,but some experts will say the cold snap is directly related to global warming rain distribution.
I expect those are the same experts who said 12 major hurricanes are comming in 2007 as a result of global warming.
Last year they batted zero with the prediction of five major hurricanes to make landfall.
SO far, there have been no major hurricanes and nothing brewing off the African coast that is organizing into a twisting vortex of T storms.

There are too many people fighting over depleted resources
