Dodd, Simon hear the sound of cheers
BY ELIZABETH AHLIN
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

COUNCIL BLUFFS — Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut is not a rock star, even at his own events.

Dodd, who has campaigned for president in the shadow of bigger political stars, was eclipsed once again Saturday — this time by singer-songwriter Paul Simon, whom Dodd invited to the campaign trail in Iowa.

Singer-songwriter Paul Simon performs Saturday during the campaign stop of Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., at Narrows River Park in Council Bluffs.

The crowd of 500 people at Narrows River Park was Dodd-friendly. Many were eager to hear his positions on immigration, the war in Iraq and health care reform.

But most of those who suffered in the heat weren't there to get a glimpse of the candidate.

1. It's (sort of) too bad that candidates have to bring celebs
In an ideal world, people would listen to the candidates and their ideas and then make a decision. But I must confess, I went to an Edwards event in '04 where Bon Jovi tagged along. And I talked to a young lady who said the reason she got interested in Edwards was because of Bon Jovi. So if having celebs along does bring people out to hear candidates, so much the better. But they shouldn't want to see just Rhymin' Simon. They (and all of us) should want to hear the candidate.

2. Christopher Dodd colluded with the biggest crooks in the Anthrax Congress--
Tom Delay and Bob Ney--to engineer electronic voting on extremely insecure and insider hackable voting machines run on 'TRADE SECRET,' PROPRIETARY programming code, owned and controlled by rightwing Bushite corporations, and to fast-track this entirely non-transparent voting system all over the country, between 2002 and 2004, with $3.9 billion in boondoggle funding. He is the 'Democrat' who is most responsible for Bush and Cheney still being in power. No doubt he expects a return favor from Diebold/ES&S, to give his candidacy, which has no constituency, a boost in the early primaries.

I believe that he is a traitor to our country, and a snake in the grass. I fear him. And I'm sorry to see Paul Simon so hoodwinked.

3. Dodd ruined himself by sticking with Joe Lieberman too long.
I always liked him until he supported Joe more than he did the democratic voters in his own state.
