Qaeda group in Iraq threatens to attack Iranians
Source: Reuters

DUBAI, July 8 (Reuters) - The leader of an al Qaeda-linked group in Iraq vowed in an audio tape on Sunday to attack Iranians unless Iran cut off its support for the Iraqi government within two months.

"We give the ... Persians in general, and leaders of Iran in particular, two months to withdraw their support and presence in Iraq," Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, leader of the self-styled Islamic State in Iraq, said in the 50-minute audio tape posted on Islamist Web site which has often carried al Qaeda statements.

In the first such threat by his group, Baghdadi said that unless Iran met his demands, the group would wage a "brutal war" against Iranians.

"We announce it today, our hands will not stay far from you," he said. He did not say whether the group would mount attacks inside Iran.

4. Wait - I thought BushCo has been saying that Iran is aiding Al Qaeda in Iraq
So which is it? This is turning into, "Who's on First, What's on Second"

5. I wonder if it is true or if it is propaganda. Time will only tell. This week the US
accused elite elements of the Iranian National Guard of abetting some insurgents in Iraq.

Which is the myth? So hard to tell these days. Thanks neocons for teaching the world how to lie.

12. This is likely more legitimate than the Bush-it we've heard
from this admin.

There was absolutely no evidence for the neocon claim that Iran was supporting Al Qaaeda - considering first and foremost that Iran is Shiite and Al Qaeda is made of loosely affiliated fanatical Sunnis. The idea itself was so nonsensical on its face. Iran even supported the ousting of the Taliban, who housed and protected Al Qaeda.

15. this reeks to me of manufactured news.
Since the it's well known that the Saudis fund the Sunni's in Iraq (and the Iranians fund the Shiites) and since the news here now term anyone against the U.S. as Al Queda, it's just reason for yet another twist in the on going soap opera brought to us by moron*.

I think the repukes are desperately looking for a new twist/spin on a way to get out of this mess and make it all look like it's someone else is fault.

if "al queda" attacks Iran and Iran responds then moron* can pull out under the guise of "we don't want to get involve in internal issues". I know that's a laugh but when they can lie to us with a straight face about other things, this would be just one more to them.

6. wow...somebody tell them about the disadvantages of fighting a multi front war
They will suffer a credibility gap in two months.
And to think the pep rally video dispatched by the leader of AQ
"DOCTOR" Ayman al-Zawahiri, seems to have fallen on deaf ears after that professionally done video. Not like the days of strolling down a rocky hill and into a cave sound stage.

http://us.video.aol.com/player/launcher?ar=us_en_video_748x541_full&mode=1&pmmsid=1935680

Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, the second individual in command of al-Qaeda, presents a speech titled, “The Advice of One Concerned”, in a one-hour and thirty-five minute video produced by the multimedia wing of as-Sahab and issued to jihadist forums
snip

Zawahiri also encourages greater support for the Islamic State of Iraq despite it lacking “necessary qualifications”, courts Kurds to join jihad, and lauds Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the deceased Emir of al-Qaeda in Iraq, formerly Tawhid Wal Jihad, for his opening of a path for greater unity in the ranks of Mujahideen by being among the first to pledge to Usama bin Laden and join al-Qaeda.

He adds that other groups have also joined the organization, though they preferreded that this news not yet be announced
, but the declarations will come soon.

maybe the Islamic state of Iraq is being surged out of Iraq.

Is it a coincidence that their announcement/proclamationo against the Islamic state of Iran in two months ( September ) happens to coincide with our own troop surge assessment ?

11. The recording seem to have been recorded in a professional
studio with soundmen and lighting crews, the whole works. You're right they've come a long way from the those cave setups with the camcorders.

18. With Turkey putting 140,000 troops on the Iraqi northern border,it wouldn't surprise me
if Iran took this AQ threat seriously when September rolls around and hastily makes plans to put troops on their own border with Iraq ;)

When we draw down our troop levels in Iraq, several countries seem to be new members in the coalition of the willing....to colonize Iraq to rekindle glory days of the Persian or Ottoman empires

As far as the professional studio stage, I wonder which city in that part of the world let them put it all together ?
I'm guessing it may be a place where journalists are allowed to report only with a government seal of approval.

There must be a hint or two in the background to say the least.

10. Bush and al-Qaeda deserve each other
Edited on Sun Jul-08-07 07:41 PM by provis99
Each has about the same level of non-rational thinking for who its enemies are, and why they want to go to war. Next I figure al-Qaeda will declare war on Saudi Arabia, and Bush will declare war on Canada. Makes about as much sense as what is happening now.

14. Actually this makes more sense than most might think at first
Edited on Sun Jul-08-07 11:43 PM by fujiyama
Considering the US is backing a Shiite government in Iraq, Al Qaeda would definitely wouldn't be in approval.

Many Sunnis consider Shiites heretics...and being that Iraq is in a civil war, the Sunnis feel like they've lost all power and are taking support from everyone and anyone - including Al Qaeda.

But our government, which was fucking stupid for getting us caught in this in the first place, has not learned anything about the rivalries and tries to claim that all of a sudden Iran is supporting groups with very different ideaologies (at least theologically) like al Qaeda.

19. What makes sense? AQ "taunting" Iran into making an incursion into Iraq?
Or at least a troop buildup to rival that of the Turks ;

20. Baghdad will sink and that's Bush's fault
No troop surge or number of troop surges will keep that from happening.

The civil war is already in full swing. Thousands (what sounds like mostly Shiites) are being ethnically cleansed in Iraq. Most of the suicide bombings are done by Sunni insurgents and Al Qaeda affiliates sponsored by the Saudis.

Iraq is THE proxy war between Iran and Saudi Arabia. While both factions hate us (and the Iranians definitely want their cut of the oil fields in Iraq), I think their hatred for each other is even greater and spans many more centuries.

It's too bad, but we literally can only provided a little humanitarian assistance. The troops are sitting ducks. Pull them the hell out. As for Bush, for starting the bloodletting, I won't speak of the punishment he deserves. It's unfortunate he will never receive it.

21. This fight has been simmering for one thousand years. Saddam sat on it
Bush popped the lid off and the next prez, most likely Bush lite, should get the troops out of the Iraqi cities and put them in the middle of the desolate, no shit desert, where there is nothing for miles and miles to hide an insurgent sneaking up on them.

We all know we are going to be there no longer then our troops occupied Germany after WW II......

Let the sunni/shia rift run its course.

22. New al-Qaeda tape threatens UK
snip

Osama bin Laden's deputy lashed out at Britain for having awarded a knighthood to Rushdie last month, saying it was defying the Islamic world by granting the honor to the author of "The Satanic Verses," deemed to insult Islam.

A "very precise response" is in preparation to retaliate against this offense, al-Zawahri was quoted as saying by SITE.

I wonder if the failed "surgical strike" at those airports was his measured response.
