4. This just in
A group of house representatives and senators flanked by members of various pharmaceutical lobby groups announced that they are drafting legislation to make the FDA put pumpkins on the same restricted list that hemp is on citing the fact that "... like hemp, it is also a plant, and who knows how much THC is in it? Until all the science is in, it's best to be safe." Senator Brownback, a social-conservative from Kansas, added, "... various religious groups believe that it is the pumpkin's potential hallucinogen-like properties which causes people to act all crazy about Halloween, a holiday rife with pagan and satanic history. For the good of our children and all Americans, it is our moral duty to ban these orange 'pseudo-vegetables.'"

5. Another serving of pumpkin pie? How 'bout some pumpkin bread? Pumpkin soup?
GINGER PUMPKIN BISQUE

2 tablespoons olive oil
3/4 cup chopped shallots
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
4 cups chicken broth
1/2 cup apple cider
1 (15- or 16-ounce) can pumpkin
1/3 cup pure maple syrup
2 bay leaves
1/4 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup half-and-half or whipping cream
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Whipping cream (optional)
Fresh thyme (optional)

In a 3-quart saucepan heat oil over medium heat. Add the shallots,
onion, and ginger; cook until tender. Stir in the flour. Carefully
add the chicken broth and cider all at once. Cook and stir over
medium heat until thickened and bubbly. Stir in the pumpkin, maple
syrup, bay leaves, dried thyme, cinnamon, pepper, and cloves.
Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 20 minutes.

Remove from heat. Discard bay leaves. Cool slightly. Pour one-fourth
to one-third of mixture into a blender container or food processor
bowl. Cover and blend or process until smooth. Pour into a bowl.
Repeat with remaining mixture until all is processed. Return the
mixture to the saucepan. Stir in the 1 cup half-and-half or whipping
cream and the vanilla. Heat through, but do not boil. Ladle into soup bowls.
If desired, swirl a little whipping cream into each serving; garnish with fresh thyme.
Makes 8 to 10 servings.

Yummy!

13. Yum! Here's a vegan version of pumpkin bisque (with coconut milk)
REALLY YUMMY! I made it just a touch spicier with chipotle puree (1 tablespoon) instead of dried, and fresh grated ginger instead of dried, ad put cilantro on top.

My wife is a diabetic now, and if it's true it will be marvellous. We'll go and buy one of those fantastic gateaux they sell in German delicatessens.

However, her doctor did ask her once, "You haven't been reading the Daily Mail, have you? I'm always saying to my mother, 'You haven't been reding the Daily Mail again, have you? Stop it!'"

25. On the contrary.
There are plenty of natural cures out there, and it's not all snake oil!!! Something as simple as Cinnamon has also been heralded as quite helpful for controlling blood sugar.

29. heralded and proven
not even close to the same thing. these dinky little studies prove nothing except that it might be worth a big enough study to get some proof.
i see drug makers pull drugs, i see doctors back off of hormone replacement therapy when large scale study turns up new dangers. but i have yet to see anyone from "little pill" back down on any product. even ephedra. see, that's the difference between science and nature worship.

31. Well the score card vs. Big Pharma
and natural cures, is tipping towards natural, don't you think? Let's see, how many deaths for synthetic toxic mainstream drugs! Can't count that high! What most folks that are on your side fail to realize is that most of the natural cures have been around for 1000's of years. They have been well documented on their effects. But let's not get into that....esp. when it's NUTRITIONAL cures we're talking about in this post. Gee, Pumpkin and Cinnamon-kinda hard to overdose on that! In other words, if it doesn't work, there are still no side effects,no harm done!

32. nobody monitors little pill
so, we have no idea how many people have died directly, or from curable diseases that went untreated because someone took shark cartilage instead of chemotherapy. maybe with a side of macrobiotic diet. like my niece.

33. Sounds like you have a bone to pick.
Sorry about your niece, but I know several people who cured cancer with diet and alternative therapies. I also know people who died after chemo and radiation. When chemo or radiation kills a cancer patient, the cause of death listed is "cancer". When cancer drugs are tested, there is no control group that gets placebos. "Standard" cancer treatments could be worse than nothing and we wouldn't know. Sorry, but your argument could just as well be used against the "standard" treatments for cancer, we don't know how well they work.

Here's a book by a woman who survived inoperable cancer with only diet and prayer.

Have you read "Love, Medicine, and Miracles" by Bernie Siegel?

15. oral insulin? Here is a longer article.
My son has Type 1 and I am extremely hopeful....

<snip>

Xia now says that the pumpkin extract is a potential treatment for pre-diabetics as well as diabetics that could help drastically reduce the amount of insulin they need to take. “Pumpkin extract is potentially a very good product for pre-diabetic persons, as well as those who have already developed diabetes,” he said.

David Bender, sub-dean at the Royal Free and University College Medical School, London, called the findings ‘very exciting’ but insisted that tests needed to be carried out first on humans before reaching any conclusions.

“This research is very exciting… the main finding is that feeding pumpkin extract prevents the progressive destruction of pancreatic beta-cells, but it is impossible to say whether pumpkin extract would promote regeneration in humans. I think the exciting thing is that this may be a source of a medication that could be taken by mouth,” he said.

The protective effect of pumpkin is thought to be due to both antioxidants and D-chiro-inositol, a molecule that mediates insulin activity.

24. If true, Only for type I diabetes, most diabetics are type II
And this would probably do nothing for them. Type I amounts to 5-10% of all diabetics.
