Vitter Issues Statement

U.S. Sen. David Vitter made the following statement today about his telephone number being on the old phone records of Pamela Martin and Associates prior to his running for the U.S. Senate. He respectfully requests that the statement be used in full without editing or paraphrasing.

"This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible. Several years ago, I asked for and received forgiveness from God and my wife in confession and marriage counseling. Out of respect for my family, I will keep my discussion of the matter there-with God and them. But I certainly offer my deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way," Vitter said.

103. Vitter was accused of carrying on a lengthy affair with a prostitute
' Vitter is in his first Senate term after serving six years in the House. During his Senate campaign, Vitter was accused by a member of the Louisiana Republican State Central Committee of carrying on a lengthy affair with a prostitute in New Orleans's French Quarter.

In a radio interview, Vitter then called the allegation "absolutely and completely untrue" and dismissed it as "just crass Louisiana politics." '

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/09/AR2007070902030.html

According to this web page
http://www.allreaders.com/politics.asp?senator=56
Vitter is firmly against legalizing prostitution.
Maybe because that would spoil the fun? He wants to be a naughty boy?

A question for Vitter: Have you stopped cheating on your wife?

Congressman is accused of having an alleged affair with prostitute
By Christopher Tidmore June 3, 2002
http://www.louisianaweekly.com/weekly/news/articlegate.pl?20020603p

' Just over one month ago, Vincent Bruno went on statewide radio and alleged that Congressman David Vitter had engaged in an extramarital affair. He refused to provide more details until now.

In what is becoming a high stakes political battle between some of the most prominent members of the Louisiana Republican Party, Bruno has charged that a prostitute, who stated her name to be Wendy Cortez, allegedly confessed to him to having a paid sexual relationship with the Congressman. Two separate and independent sources appear to confirm Bruno's allegation stating that Cortez also recounted to them the details of her alleged affair with Vitter.

Supporters of Vitter flatly deny Bruno's charges. They accuse him of having political motivations, and question the veracity of Cortez's story.

"I know it's not true. I don't give it any credence," says Jim St. Raymond, political consultant to David Vitter.

Tidmore Vindicated, Responds to Vitter Revelations
http://www.thedeadpelican.com/tidvindicated.htm

' Nearly five years ago, Louisiana Weekly columnist Christopher Tidmore reported that David Vitter, while a Louisiana State Representative, had allegedly conducted an eleven month affair with a known prostitute, Wendy Cortez—meeting typically at a small apartment at the corner of Dumaine and Dauphine Streets in the French Quarter.

Despite testimony from four senior Republicans who spoke to Cortez--and direct confirmation from the source--then-Congressman David Vitter accused Tidmore of “crass Louisiana politics, now that I am running for the Senate. I have made that clear that it is all completely untrue...And, it's obviously politically motivated." ...'

which is probably the reason her hubby went to a prostitute. This is a quite common occurrence in fundie families.

51. I have to protest. Your post implies that this is somehow Vitter's wife's fault.
No way. This is David Vitter's choice, David Vitter's action, and David Vitter's fault. Not his wife's fault.

Please don't shift the blame to his wife. We don't know anything at all about their sex life, except that the Vitters claim to be devout Catholics. Conservative Catholics believe that the only purpose for sex is procreation. David Vitter has a 0% rating from NARAL due to, among other things, his strong stance against contraception of any kind.

David Vitter is not supposed to enjoy sex for the sake of sex. He's not supposed to want to have sex except to make babies. That's based on his own words and his extremely conservative voting record.

It is particularly hypocritical for David Vitter to have gone to a prostitute. Don't blame this on his wife. If he was having problems with his marriage, he could have turned to his parish priest. That's the belief system that David Vitter espouses.

52. All those fundie men lie! They like kinky sex and all kinds of sex.
Their equally fundie wives believe in the missionary position, and that sex is not for pleasure, but for procreation.

While the fundie wives are safely tucked away at home, in that wonderful patriarchy that is fundamentalist religion, the men go catting around behind their backs.

We have many fundie conferences in Indianapolis, groups like the Promise Keepers for example. There is always an upsurge in the sex business when those people come around. While some of them are shouting their love for Jay-Zeus, others go seeking paid sex from prostitutes, male and female. It is only when they get caught that they spill that bullshit about sin.

Staunch conservative supporter of protection for marriage
Senate Majority Supports Marriage Protection Amendment
Marriage amendment picks up four Senate votes over ’04
The Hill, April 12, 2006
By James Downing

A majority of the Senate this year will support the Federal Marriage Amendment, an outcome that both the left and the right say will energize their respective bases in November.

In the summer of 2004, the effort to define marriage as between a man and a woman failed in the Senate, on a 48-50 vote. Now that Republicans have increased their majority, the amendment has collected more support. If all senators vote the way they did in 2004 and the freshmen vote as expected, the bill will attract 52 votes — well short of the 67 needed to amend the Constitution.

First-term Sens. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), Mel Martinez (R-Fla.), John Thune (R-S.D.) and David Vitter (R-La.) have all co-sponsored the amendment. These four legislators replaced Democrats who voted against the amendment in 2004.

He represents the Rethug constituency in my state but, in giving credit where it's due, he's kind enough to acknowledge the rest of us whenever we write him long-thought-out pleadings for change. The reply is usually a form letter of praise for the boy king, scorn for Clinton, or a little of both, not remotely addressing the points made in our letters to him.

13. Nice guy ..... Rhodes Scholar and a bigot too.
In June 2006, in line with several of his Republican colleagues in the Senate, Vitter came out strongly in
favor of amending the U.S. Constitution to ban same sex marriages. He said, "I don't believe there's any
issue that's more important than this one ... I think this debate is very healthy, and it's winning a lot of
hearts and minds. I think we're going to show real progress."<3>

At a Lafayette Parish Republican Executive Committee luncheon, Vitter also compared gay marriage to
hurricanes Katrina and Rita, stating, "It's the crossroads where Katrina meets Rita. I always knew I was
against same-sex unions."

22. Another Vitter gem- NCLB, family privacy and military recruiters
Edited on Mon Jul-09-07 10:16 PM by JoFerret
No Child Left Behind Act Invades Family Privacy
Buried deep within Bush's highly touted No Child Left Behind Act is a provision that requires public high schools to hand over private student information to military recruiters. This provision allows minor students to be recruited at home by telephone calls, mail and personal visits. If a school does not comply, it risks losing vital federal education funds. This provision, known as section 9528, was inserted with almost no debate into the No Child Left Behind Act by newly-elected Rep. David Vitter of Louisiana, who learned from the Pentagon that many public schools had strict privacy policies protecting student information from being released to any outside parties, thus preventing aggressive military recruiting. Under Section 9528, the only way to keep children's contact information from military recruiters, is for parents to submit an "opt-out" letter in writing to the school district's superintendent.

I hate it when people talk about someone who "had" to pay for sex. Did you ever consider that some guys actually enjoy hiring someone for sex and/or intimacy? I consider it to be a luxury.

And just thinking about Antonio - I highly doubt that he's never utilized the services of an "escort" agency.

69. WA POST: "a lengthy affair with a prostitute in New Orleans's French Quarter"
Senator's Number on 'Madam' Phone List

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/09/AR2007070902030.html?hpid=topnews

Vitter is in his first Senate term after serving six years in the House. During his Senate campaign, Vitter was accused by a member of the Louisiana Republican State Central Committee of carrying on a lengthy affair with a prostitute in New Orleans's French Quarter.

In a radio interview, Vitter called the allegation "absolutely and completely untrue" and dismissed it as "just crass Louisiana politics."

....

Vitter and his wife, Wendy, a former prosecutor, have four children. On his Senate Web site, Vitter says he is committed to "advancing mainstream conservative principles" and notes that he has his wife are lectors at their hometown church.

His party has already been successful in heaping most of the blame for the response to Katrina on the Louisiana Democrats, and the loss of black New Orleans Dems to other states only helped speed up LA's shift towards becoming a solid red state. The only folks Vitter has to worry about are his Repug fundy base, and most of them couldn't care less how big of a hypocrite and "sinner" Vitter is as long as he invokes God at every available opportunity.

Asked by an interviewer in 2000 whether she could forgive her husband if she learned he'd had an extramarital affair, as Hillary Clinton and Bob Livingston's wife had done, Wendy Vitter told the Times-Picayune: "I'm a lot more like Lorena Bobbitt than Hillary. If he does something like that, I'm walking away with one thing, and it's not alimony, trust me."

In June 2006, Vitter came out strongly in favor of amending the U.S. Constitution to ban same sex marriages. He said, "I don't believe there's any issue that's more important than this one ... I think this debate is very healthy, and it's winning a lot of hearts and minds. I think we're going to show real progress."

125. I certainly agree.
I also agree that prostitution should be legalized. Whatever consenting adults do is their own business, and shouldn't be the business of the government on any level.

However, here you have a man who has made his public platform slamming homosexuals, and was even a cosponsor of the "Defense of Marriage Act" to put an amendment in our own constitution to promote hate and segregation. The whole basis of his promoting that act was that "marriage is a sacred institution deserving respect and protection" while at the same time, as a married man himself with children was going out and banging prostitutes.

That is VERY worthy of our judgement, and condemnation imo.
