Report: Fake Drinking Water Hits Beijing
Source: Associated Press

BEIJING (AP) -- China's food safety monitor promised Tuesday to investigate a report that more than half of the water coolers in Beijing use counterfeit branded water.

The water is either tap water or purified water from small suppliers put into the water jugs and sealed with bogus quality standard marks, the Beijing Times newspaper said in a lengthy report Monday.

.....

Beijing's tap water is generally not safe to drink because of the city's aging pipes; boiling water leaves a white powdery residue inside pots and kettles. Signs in luxury hotels in the capital tell guests that water has been treated and is safe to drink, but most Chinese consider it unsafe and do not drink it themselves.

.........................

The report said the practice is widespread because water from major suppliers can cost twice as much as water from other sources.

1. Same thing goes on here
Much bottled water is just filtered tap water from municipal supplies.

6. Key word: "filtered"
So, not quite the same thing as pouring (unflitered) tap water into a bottle and labeling it safe.

2. Gosh, I'm SO surprised.
Are they putting toxic waste into the bottled water as an new and profitable way to dispose of it, too?? They really have got that corporate profit thing down pat.

12. They've been doing that for decades
since they started adding fluoride to water, not to mention toothpaste etc. I highly recommend reading the Fluoride Deception for more info.

3. Yes, but our tap water is generally safe
Our drinking water standards are quite strict and are actually followed with strict reporting and testing in most places.

The comparison to what's going on in Beijing is a stretch to say the least.

9. anti-Chinese propaganda?
How do you figure that?

Even the Chinese themselves are waking up to the fact that regulations and controls are rapidly deteriorating in the new "market" economy.

Corruption among regulators and government officials is getting to be a real problem.

It's not just us that are noticing it.

When is their Most-Favored Nation trade status due up for renewal?

China's corps are doing what (okay, the forced organ donations from the prison population does go a bit far) many US corporations would love to - and sometimes have - to get ahead. And it's US-based CEOs who sign off on the dotted lines for all the outsourcing.
