Black jury unable to find verdict

The US jury in the $60m (£29.5m) fraud trial of media
tycoon Lord Black has said it is unable to reach a
unanimous verdict and asked the judge for advice.

Lord Black is on trial in Chicago accused of 11 charges
of fraud, one count of obstruction of justice, and one
of racketeering.

The charges relate to his tenure as chief executive of
newspaper publisher Hollinger International.

The jury has been in deliberation for nine days.

U.S. judge tells deadlocked Black jury to resume
Tue Jul 10, 2007 6:14PM EDT

By Andrew Stern

CHICAGO (Reuters) - The judge presiding over Conrad
Black's criminal fraud trial ordered the jury to keep
deliberating on Tuesday after the panel said it was
deadlocked in reaching a unanimous decision on the
former media baron and his three co-defendants.

The jury, in its ninth day of deliberations, told Judge Amy
St. Eve of the U.S. District Court it could not agree on a
verdict on "one or more counts" in the complex, 42-count
trial.

Defense lawyers told the judge they would have preferred
to let the jury render a partial verdict immediately but
prosecutors argued for deliberations to continue.

St. Eve sent the 12-member jury back after simply repeating
to them a part of her original jury instructions.

3. Verdict could come Wednesday at Black trial
If Conrad Black's American lawyer is correct, the jury at the fraud trial of the ex-media baron will come back with a full or partial verdict today.

"It's over. It's over tomorrow," Edward Genson, Black's Chicago-based attorney, told reporters Tuesday after court ended. "If it's a good verdict, I'll be happy. If not, I'll be sad. It's as simple as that."

Genson said juries rarely go back and reach an agreement on charges following a deadlock.

The nine women and three men are being asked to render unanimous verdicts on 42 different charges involving four defendants: Black, former Hollinger executives Jack Boultbee and Peter Atkinson, and lawyer Mark Kipnis.

4. Hey, jury! I found the verdict!
He's guilty, filthy dirty greedy guilty! Put his pasty ass in jail, pronto!

And by the way, if this huffing prick had never done anything illegal in his reprehensible life, he's almost enough of a bad person to make me think people should be indicted for simply being bad, when it's on this kind of level.

The man is an international disgrace.

6. No kidding! Handouts from Hollinger for everyone! Whoopee. They're rich!
What a disgrace.

At least he doesn't have to go through the Ken Lay routine, bless his heart.
