Bush again links Iraq violence to 9/11
Jonathan S. Landay | McClatchy Newspapers

last updated: July 10, 2007 08:02:30 PM

WASHINGTON — Struggling to stem growing opposition to his Iraq policy even among Republicans, President Bush contended anew Tuesday that the perpetrators of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks in the United States are the same as al Qaida in Iraq, a violent Iraqi insurgent group that didn't exist until after the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.

It was the second time in two weeks that Bush has made the link in an apparent attempt to transform lingering fear of another U.S. terrorist attack into backing for the current buildup of U.S. troops in Iraq.

"Al Qaida is doing most of the spectacular bombings, trying to incite sectarian violence," Bush told a business group in Cleveland, Ohio. "The same people that attacked us on September the 11th is a crowd that is now bombing people, killing innocent men, women and children, many of whom are Muslims."

Al Qaida in Iraq didn't emerge until 2004. While it is inspired by Osama bin Laden's violent ideology, there's no evidence that the Iraq organization is under the control of the terrorist leader or his top aides, who are believed to be hiding in tribal regions of Pakistan bordering Afghanistan.

5. He really thinks he can make anything true if it just says it often enough
He honestly believes he can do it. I mean, it bought him 41% of the public, so there's something to his method, but he really thinks he can get it all the way to 100% if he just does it often enough.

8. I thought the same
then realized the source was McClatchy, who did a decent job on pre-invasion coverage also.

When I read this sort of story from the NYT or WAPO or AP, then I'll start being happy about the exposure.

11. Here again is where the Dems
do not even challenge bush on this. They should have someone always on standby anytime the pResident speaks and go before any of the MSM and get the word out.....Have you all noticed the MSM has bought into the new White House propaganda using the term Al Queda instead of insurgents in Iraq? This begs the question:How Did the Mainstream Media Suddenly Transform a Diverse Group of Insurgents in Iraq Into Al-Qaeda? Because They are Stenographers, and This is the Latest White House Propaganda Tactic. From Buzz Flash
I do thank you
Ben David

12. Yeah... Just to say "There was no attacks from AQ before bu$che
lied on chainy's orders, and then sent our boys 'n girls to lose limbs and/or die for their lies, because they wanted to steal the Iraqi people's "cheap" (for them) oil," and repeat it over and over, each time the robber-chimp brings his b-s back. It seems to be a little something that is sooooo difficult to do ("to tell the truth to the U.S. and the world").

Why, why, why, why?

14. exactly, Ben
Suddenly the homegrown, 'insurgents' are Al Qaeda. My foot. I googled Al Qaeda, recently, looking for origins. I found an article that explained Al Qaeda was an after-thought of a list kept in Afghanistan of training camp attendees. It is a term Bushites coined to name the enemy. It's an invention of fearmongers, as far as I'm concerned. Everytime I hear, Al Qaeda, I discount the news story as fabricated to some degree.
