Chilean judge nixes Fujimori extradition request

SANTIAGO (AFP) - A Chilean judge Wednesday rejected Lima's request
to extradite former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori to Peru, where
he faces corruption and human rights charges.

"In a 122-point summary the judge rejected the Peruvian government's
request," said court spokesman Cristian Fuenzalida. The ruling can be
appealed in one more high court which would be the last appeal possible
in the case.

The judge rejected all of the charges as extradition grounds, Chilean
court sources said.

The decision runs counter to what Chile's Attorney (Prosecutor) General
Monica Maldonado has recommended. A month ago Maldonado urged that
Fujimori be extradited to neighboring Peru on the basis of most of the
charges against him.
