Guards steal $282 million from a bank in Baghdad
Source: IHT

BAGHDAD: In an astonishing heist, guards at a bank here made off with more than a quarter-billion dollars on Wednesday, according to an official at the Interior Ministry.

The robbery, of $282 million from the Dar Es Salaam bank, a private financial institution, raised more questions than it answered, and officials were tight-lipped about the crime. The local police said two guards engineered the robbery, but an official at the Interior Ministry said three guards were involved.

Both confirmed that the stolen money was in American dollars, not Iraqi dinars. It was unclear why the bank had that much money on hand in dollars, or how the robbers managed to move such a large amount without being detected.

Several officials speculated that the robbers had connections to the militias, because it would be difficult for them to move without being searched through many checkpoints in Baghdad.

Otherwise on Wednesday, there was only scattered violence in the city, although 18 bodies were found by the police in different neighborhoods, signaling that sectarian killing had not ebbed.

5. Can you think of a better way to steal that much
money, and hide it from view,, than to claim 2 security guards stole it... 2 or even 3 people can't physically carry that much money, much less hide it.

11. It's amazing that something like this could be reported as fact. Or near enough.
Unless they had Portable Holes or something.

12. That they think we are stupid enough to buy this bullshit is just insulting.
$282 million would be a pile of bills about 16 yds, by 12 yds, by 4ft. high and would weigh almost 6 tons, but 2 or 3 guys can sneak away with it in the middle of the night.

of this awful excuse for making a unilateral invasion into another country! can ya all believe they've gotten away with this "war" for this long?

shocking... musta really hired some psychologists to talk about how to scare people, or Rover-boy is an evil genius (I can't believe he came up with everything on his own... but then again... wouldn't be shocking, cuz W's dumb as a rock)

20. This is a petty crime compared to the heist they used the US military for
and have we forgotten how we were able to watch and track down Saddam hauling a BILLION dollars out of a bank a night or two before the war started and CATCH HIM but now *poof* no such luck

It was unclear why the bank had that much money on hand in dollars, or how the robbers managed to move such a large amount without being detected.

16. does anyone remember the story of $150K? ($500K?) in cash in a barrel
in the back of a truck that drove into a nuclear power plant here in the US?

why did that story disappear into the ozone? every time I read about "missing money" and stories like this one, I think of that one, how the cabal can so easily move massive amounts of cash around--and even when discovered, make the story go away, or morph it into something absurd, like this story of "2 guards" stealing 6 tons of money.

TONS. Geez, I hope it was shrink-wrapped and they had a dolly.

Just two guys? Yeah, right. Only if their names are Bush and Cheney.
