Ambassador: Kurd terrorists have U.S. arms
Source: UPI

WASHINGTON, July 11 (UPI) -- Kurdish terrorists in northern Iraq are using U.S.-made arms and explosives to attack Turkish forces and citizens, the Turkish ambassador said Wednesday.

"From terrorists captured within Turkey we know that certain weapons are of foreign origins. The explosive are sophisticated enough for us to suggest forces in the north are getting them from certain foreign groups," Ambassador Nabi Sensoy told defense reporters in Washington. "We know there have been a number of weapons of American origins. "It doesn't mean the United States has supplied them, not necessarily. ... We know the USA is shipping arms to the northern Iraq administration. It is just possible they are ending up in the hands of terrorist organizations."

2. Ok, that's the first sensible explanation I've heard floated for this.
US sends arms to Kurdish security forces. Kurdish regional administration sends a portion of these arms to anti-Turkish militants. Makes total sense.

3. And then if the Kurds have their way...
They will be carving out parts of Turkey and Iran for a nation they have been fighting for since they were all Ottomans...

5. Absolutely. Not that I expect them to have their way.
But certainly they would not exactly be broken up if that was the result.

aANKARA • Turkey has formally demanded an explanation from the United States about how US weapons have ended up in the hands of Turkish Kurd rebels based in neighbouring Iraq, Foreign Minister Abdullah was quoted as saying yesterday.

Ankara began probing the issue this month after a militant of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) who surrendered to the Turkish authorities said he once saw two US armoured vehicles deliver weapons to a PKK camp in Iraq’s Qandil mountains, on the border with Iran.

The Turkish army “also have suspicions, they have certain documents,” Gul said in remarks published in the Radikal newspaper.

“We called the US ambassador to the foreign ministry. My undersecretary showed him the documents... He said this could not be possible, but said he would ask Washington to look into the issue,” Gul said. ~snip~
