Chertoff says Qaeda not posing pre-Sept 11 threat

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said on Thursday the threat to the United States from al Qaeda has not returned to levels seen just before the September 11 attacks nearly six years ago.

Chertoff played down media reports that the militant network was now as great a threat to U.S. soil as in the months before the September 11 attacks on Washington and New York.

"I wouldn't put it at that level," he told ABC's "Good Morning America." "I do think we've accomplished an awful lot in dismantling their activities overseas and in building our own defenses. But I do think the level of intent on the part of the enemy remains very high."

The Washington Post reported the militant network has significantly rebuilt itself and established a safe haven in remote tribal areas of western Pakistan. It cited a new intelligence report to be reviewed by Chertoff and other top officials at a White House meeting later Thursday.

Okay, now I'm really confused...

1. Chertoff warns us of an impending threat of attack

2. The Administration counters Chertoff by saying there's no evidence of increased risk

3. Administration Intelligence officials prepare a report that says "Al Qaeda has reconstituted itself and is a strong as it was on 9/11"

4. Chertoff disputes the intelligence estimate and says Al Qaeda hasn't regained its strength

So, we have DHS saying we're being threatened by an organization that isn't that strong, and the Administration saying our enemy is getting stronger but isn't threatening us. Am I missing something?

We need to clear things up for the American People
What Skeletor Chertoff is really saying is:
The level of Al-Kida is not pre 9/11 strength, but after 9/11 strength but before Iraq illegal
invasion strength, but only on certain days of the week, at certain times,and only in certain
areas of the World, for example on Mondays in Somalia the alert level is high, Tuesdays and
Wednesdays in Pakistan the alert level is moderate, but on Fridays in Pakistan it is very high,
but only in the months of May, June and July.
While here in the US the summer time is extremely high, but dont let that fool you, only during
or after Fridays and on Mondays only, in the areas of the US where they are having heavy rain
the alert level is low, because Al-Kida cant swim.
So the Southwest where they are having a heat wave, it is on moderate to high alert, but only
in cities that start with the letter A-L, all of the other cities are on low alert, unless they
have a mayor that has the last name of Smith or Jones.
The East Coast of the US alert system is the most complicated, the highest alert level is when
a President is out of the area and in a Southern State, for example Florida.
Only during a military excercise is that the highest alert ever, and only on Tuesdays and only
in the month of September.

I hope this helps people, as we needed to clarify this as much as possible so we are not
terrified when Al-Kida strikes next time.......:hi:
