Edwards Campaign HQ Evacuated

Updated: 35 minutes ago

Chapel Hill — A suspicious package addressed to Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards forced the evacuation of his campaign headquarters Thursday, the third time authorities have responded to mail addressed to the office.

Capt. Bob Overton of the Chapel Hill Police Department said he did not know the contents of the package, but he said authorities have deemed it suspicious.
"We are investigating the package at this time," Overton said.

The package was found in the mail at about 10 a.m. Thursday, authorities said. A small section of the Southern Village complex in Chapel Hill was blocked off.

5. I thought they don't get SS protection until they are the nominee. But yes,
he needs to get protection of some kind.

7. Traditionally yes,

you get SS protection when you become the nominee. But there has been so much attention so early on all the Dem candidates, they were offered it. I know Obama was. I don't know if he took it or not.

edit: Hil and Bill get it anyway as ex WH occupants, right?

15. only Hillary and Obama
Hillary gets it cause she was the ex first lady. Obama got it cause he had received hate mail, and everybody knew someone would try something.

I believe once the nominees are decided, each nominee will get Secret Service protection, but until then they rely on their own security details. Unless the Secret Service has reason to step in, such as the Obama case.

9. Not this year. Border Patrol personnel have been lent to the SS for candidate protection
The big batch of candidates has stressed the Secret Service to the point they are borrowing people from other agencies.

6. Edwards has a lot to say about poverty in the United States and
around the world.

Very sad to say, there are some folks in the shadows of that same world who would prefer that Senator Edwards hush up.

Much to his gleaming credit, John Edwards isn't about to hush up.

I don't think these mysterious and cowardly packages are going to stifle debate in this country, and I believe you'd hear the same comment from the Edwards team. They're a hell of a capable bunch and their voice needs to be heard, and is protected by a little ol' thing called the Constitution.

Cowards licking postage stamps onto parcels doesn't cut it in a constitutional republic.

8. Oh no, they won't shut Edwards up
not by a long shot. LOL!

I really have to wonder about the mental stability of people who send potentially dangerous packages. I mean, sheez, wouldn't it be more productive just to protest in front of his office? At least that wouldn't be so cowardly.

10. Hi, supernova. Good point on the open protest. If people find
disagreement with Edwards' message, they should grow a spine and stand on their own two feet instead of the slimey weasel-job with the package.

12. Could also be some hired hands for the many big corporations he has gone after?
Seems likely the 'powers that be' wouldn't cotton to his head on approach to the disparities in the US. With Coulter running amok, inspiring the lone wolf actions the RW and Fundie pundits will 'deplore' if someone actually gets hurt, there is sure a lot of cover for any paid hit man the rich and infamous may want to send out into the mix.

13. I hadn't considered that angle, but it seems plausible. Edwards'
work against specific corporations has the potential to provoke them, especially if they see the trajectory of his career to date as prologue to his possible presidency.

I would love to believe that no one working for corporations was capable of such dark actions. But my newspapers suggest that would be naive.

21. This Is Very Upsetting
and it is just what Edwards was talking about in Tampa a couple of weeks ago. He was saying they don't like the message he's trying to spread and their tactic is to "kill the messenger." He went on with that and the whole time I was cringing. I mean, I'm not supersticous or anything, but the whole time he was doing that bit I wanted to knock on wood, throw salt over my shoulder and spit three times.

22. We need to find these "enemy combatants"...
Edited on Thu Jul-12-07 07:46 PM by calipendence
They likely in effect ARE terrorists!

Also remember that recent video clip here that showed that Kucinich some years back was a target of assassination too. We have some very evil people that feel threatened the wiser we have gotten to the corporatocracy and have people like Edwards trying to answer the call to change it.
